To me diapering simply is having a system that works best for your family. One simple system that works again and again and again. Over changing sizes and shapes.

I wanted to reiterate that simplifying can mean different things to different people. It almost always means frugal, but it can apply to organizational simplicity as well.
Much of the reason why many hyena diapers are hard to get a hold of is because of their simplicity, versatility, and absorbancy. Some are beautiful works of art, but most are simply good. Clearly, if you spend a huge amount of time trying to secure a diaper, you're working hard enough to negate the simplicity you're trying to achieve.
But, for example, if I were to simplify my collection of bags, I would chose the few bags that worked the best, were the most versatile, and were the most useful, and clear out the rest. I would want to be left with the one bag that worked the best for me and did the best for me.
Similarly, simplifying your diapers can mean reducing the roomfulls of mish-mosh that may or may not work down to an essential collection of useful, versatile diapers.
My point is that there doesn't need to be any conflict or even separation.
That was really an aside, because this thread is great. I'm just reacting to one comment.... This one
"I don't think we're really talking about "simple" diapering as in easy. I think we're talking about "simple" diapering as in diapering with simplicity. The definition for simplicity is: Absence of luxury or showiness; plainness. If we're talking about what I think we're talking about, then no, hyena diapers are not simple."
