Sewing Machine or Serger?

x-post in TAO - forgot this group was here
SIL and I are wanting to start selling some things. We live 2 hours apart. She has a sewing machine, I have nothing - yet. I want to get something so we can get things started. I'm not sure what I need more ( I can only afford one right now) - a sewing machine or serger. I want to be able to do wipes, doublers, mama cloth, breast pads, cart covers, and some other things that will require sewing. Any advice??
Where do I start? What features do I look for? Brand? Etc???

Thanks!

Hi

IMO you should get a sewing machine before you get a serger because while a sewing machine can do an overlock stich (similar to a serger stich) a serger cannot sew like a regular sewing machine. If you have a store around you that sells sewing machines I highly reccomend you go look at both and you will see what I mean. A sewing machine offers you alot more flexability with how you use it and while I love my serger, I couldn't make most if not all of my projects without using my sewing machine. HTH
