Changing terminology: foreskin vs. shaft skin

Poll Results: What should intactivists call the skin that is removed from the circumcised penis?

This is a multiple choice poll
  • 51% (24)
    Foreskin--it's what people are accustomed.
  • 8% (4)
Shaft skin--it's what it really is, and foreskin makes it sound insignificant
  • 14% (7)
Prepuce--proper terminology helps make a verbal impact
  • 19% (9)
Penis/Penile skin--same reason as shaft skin, above
  • 6% (3)
    Other--please explain thoroughly

Many people agree that using the word foreskin seems to hinder our cause. Do you think we should continue using the word foreskin or phase it out for something different?

You may pick more than one answer.

i am divided between foreskin and prepuce- prepuce is just not that friendly, i wouldn't use it regularly for the same reason i don't use vulva in routine conversation, but for a medical conversation where it is proper, sure. latin is not my first language. (nak so forgive no quotes caps etc.)

shaft skin may be more correct in part, but i would rather concentrate on making intact (vs uncircumcised) the standard in terminology. shaft skin is just going to confuse people imho .

OT: I decided to teach my son that mommy has a "vulva" instead of a vagina because technically the vagina is hidden from normal view. Yeah, he likes to accompany me to the bathroom and is in that pointing and looking curious stage

What about just calling it "the end of the penis?" So when people ask if my ds is circed, I can and say "WHY would I cut off the end of his penis?"

I voted for prepuce, but unfortunately that is a yucky sounding word. Just like smegma. Smegma should just be caused peniswax just like earwax. I am one for technical words though.

Wouldn't prepuce translate to have the exact same meaning as foreskin? Pre=fore and puce=skin?

My high school Latin teacher would tell you I'm no Latin scholar, though. :LOL

ETA: I'm a doofus. Skin would be "pellis," I think. I have no idea what "puce" might mean. Doh!

Great idea Quirky. Too bad I can't change poll choices or I would have added it.

Ummm . . . . Talking, writing, etc is called communication. If you use words that your listener or reader doesn't understand, you're not communicating, just making noises or marks on paper or screen.

To that end, foreskin is universally understood. It really isn't shaft skin. Although it appears the same on the outside and there is no line of demarcation, the foreskin is different than the foreskin in sturcture and in skin type on it's inner surfaces. The inner foreskin is mucosal skin. The foreskin also has unique anatomical structures such as the frenar band or preputial sphincter. Not differentiating between the foreskin and shaft skin would be like trying to not differentiate between cheek skin and eyelids. There is a difference.

Prepuce is correct but if you say prepuce to some people, you will get a blank stare from them. Penile/penis skin does not accurately describe the foreskin/prepuce.

I occasionally use prepuce selectively but I think foreskin is more universally understood.

Nay, we've had enough trouble with "intact." Are you trying to be a trouble-maker?

I voted for foreskin; it's what people are used to, and if you use the word prepuce, they're going to look at you like you've sprouted a second head! Besides, I don't know how to pronounce the word prepuce myself.

Pre-poose. Emphasis on the first sylable and a long "e." Now you know.

I didn't answer the poll bc it really doesn't matter too much to me (as long as people stop cutting the damned thing off) but....
