Buzzing penis?

I was with my 4 yo DS this past week while he was going potty. (He stands to pee.) I was kinda off in never-never land while he was doing his thing, but then he said, "Mommy, look, it's going all crazy!" I look down, and while he was peeing, the tip of his penis was vibrating very fast back and forth. Naturally, DS thought this was pretty cool. I asked DH about it that night, but as DH is circ'ed, he didn't know exactly what it was (he says it's never happened to him) but thought maybe the force of the urine against the foreskin was causing it to do that. He admitted that was just a guess, though.

Today, DS went potty, and when he came out he announced that his penis "was buzzing all around" again. He still thought it was pretty cool, so I'm confident it's not causing him pain.

Any idea what this is? Or does my son just have mysteriously musical genetalia?

I don't know the answer, but maybe he's pushing hard with his stream of urine, causing it to vibrate?

Hmmm...I've never heard of that. Does any other part of his body ever "twitch"? I'd ask a doc to make sure it's not a nerve thing...

Nope. And it's not so much a "twitch" as a vibration. I think of twitches as a random muscular contraction, and this definitely isn't. It was just a fast vibration.

Really, that's the only thing I can think of. Like maybe he's pushing the urine out instead of just letting it come out. I know I can push my urine out with greater force if I want to, so I'm assuming boys/men can, too.

And it's just the very tip that does it, which made me think it's an "intact" issue.

Thanks for the laugh, Sarah! I suspect that this is a variation of "spraying." As boys become ready for retraction, there can be some misalignment between the urethral meatus and the foreskin opening that caused the urine stream to bounce of the inner foreskin typically in a spray pattern. I suspect this is just a quite entertaining variation of that. Spraying is self correcting usually with in a few months but this sounds like it may self correct even sooner than that. I can imagine your son will miss this entertaining feature when it does.

In any case, I don't think it's anything to worry about.
