My playsilks


I wanted to show off the playsilks I dyed for dd. I used the kool-aid method. There is 6 sold colored silks. I also plan on doing two larger ones that have all the colors (striped) on them. Any advice on how to do strips on a playsilk using kool-aid.

Also... I am not very excited about the purple and the orange. Any advice there?

For the orange and purple did you use one color or did you create them by mixing colors? If you just did one color you might try using a little less of what made the purple and more of what made the orange. There are also recipes somewhere for color mixing kool aid dyes.

As for doing stripes you could apply the colors using squirt bottles like in tie-dye. Then wrap it in saran wrap, coil it in a pie dish a nuke. Voila! Stripes

Your playsilks look great! Fun isn't it?

I adore the purple I get when I use Wilton's cake decorating paste colors in Violet. It goes from a pretty lavender to a rich deep blue, depending on how much you use. Mix it up just like Kool-aid, but you have to use vinegar - I use a glug for each cup of water. Wilton's is cheaper than Kool-aid if you are doing lots of silks, it is much more concentrated and they have a nicer range of colors.

Did you use orange kool-aid for the orange? Mine usually seems orangier than yours.

I've read that Wilton's cake frosting dye in violet gives a nice, clear purple on silk.... but I've not tried it myself. Only used koolaid and teas here.

For the purple I used grape kool-aid and a dap of food coloring (red and blue)

for the orange I just used plain orange kool-aid.

If I I re-dye the orange to make it darker would it work? Like add two more packets?

#1. Will it bleed when you wash it?

#2. Where did you get the silk?

I really want to make some playsilks that are all one color with my girls. I ordered a bunch from thecolorfarm.com (Joy) and now I just want to make some plain ones. I looked up how to do it, but I am not sure where to get the silk.

I don't know yet I am going to just hand wash them in the sink if I need to because I am nervous about bleeding.

#2. Where did you get the silk?

I got mine from DHARMA but you can also get them from THAI

With either kool aid or fiber reactive dyes, if you set them properly(right level of heat, Ph, etc) the shouldn't bleed.
