This is for my step-nephew, my stepsister is pretty crunchy, and I'm willing to spend $10-15. They love books... but I'm not set on a book, whatever I can get quickly and mail quickly!!!! Thanks!!

A book on birds and an inexpensive bird feeder? This is what we bought for our 5-year-old nephew. Hopefully he'll like it. I chose an adult book but with fairly simple text, lots of pictures, etc. I figure he can look at it or have it read to him. The book was $9 and the feeder was $5. I also tossed in a $2 bag of bird seed. Since you are mailing you may want to skip the seed anyhow as it is quite heavy.

I was going to suggest the build it yourself birdhouse you can get at Target. I found one near the hardware section.

They have bird feeders at Sears too (build it yourself kind), but they aren't as pretty.

I think that SOME Toys R Us have the building kits too.

Klutz book kits. At the book store they range from $5-$20 and there are some cool ones for all ages.

Sports equiptment? Basketball, hoop, baseball, bat, mit, soccer ball, frisbee, kite, etc.

"Exploring" equiptment? Bug kits with jar and tweezers, Binoculars, compass, laminated maps, water bottle with packpack, etc.

At the gift shop of your local zoo, aquarium, science center, museum; action figures or activity books, etc. [You dont need to pay to go in the gift shop, FYI]

Gardening stuff like digging tools, gloves, pots, seeds, etc. Including a few live worms would make you THE best Aunt ever!! [Ask where you'd get garden supplies or fishing supplies, etc.]

Oh! Fishing pole, Sleeping bag, Flashlight, etc.

If you order online, ship directly to save moola.

A set of locks with keys.

Let's see:
Age 6, boy... for that age and more importantly price range, I would go with a board game.
I hear on the radio yesterday that toys r us has a ton of those on sale.
Candyland or Monopoly would be great, and very cheap.

My new favorite gift for this price range is a stamp craft set. Those people who make the cool wooden puzzles (can't remember their names) have a wooden box full of 2 stamp pads and around 8 or so stamps. They have one set with hearts and stuff and one set with dinosaurs (since your nephew may not prefer hearts and stuff). I even found it at Toys R Us. Among the kind of educational toys. When individual rubbers stamps are like $4 each, this kit is a really great buy, as well.
