newborn covers

Ok, nothing like waiting until the last minute. C-section in 2.5 weeks and I'm on bedrest which is turning out to be more like "keep my feet up all the time and the bp stays down" rest.

I have lightweight windpro. Is one layer enough for a newborn cover? I'm thinking yes. Bind with microfleece binding ok?

I have felted wool jersey. Again, is just one layer enough for a newborn cover? and to retain all the postive wool benefits, I should probably self bind it with strips of wool rather than microfleece right?

I'm trying to do very simple, easy construction for newborn, since they aren't in that size very long.

Any tips about sewing for a newborn when you've never done it before? She'll be on the small side.. low 7lbs or under since she's coming out with a c-section at 36 weeks, 6 days.

I use the walmart fleece 2 layers, its not very thick and it works for my girl on light days, i have been using the ottobre pattern as a cover pattern cuz its free but use whatever diaper pattern your using and just make it 1/4 - 1/2 bigger all the way around. Seems that'd work fine. HTH

How felted is it? I just felted some yesterday, and I felted it so much that it's a tad over 1/8" thick! I think this will make a fine one-layer cover, even for nighttime. Haven't sewn it up yet though. Supposedly, wool jersey is supposed to be 1 layer for daytime and 2 layers for nighttime.

I'm not planning to bind mine. I'll just fold over the edge and sew... question for anyone: Does wool jersey fray? I know the wool flannel cover I have doesn't look like it would fray even if it weren't serged.

Good luck on new babe and all the sewing you have ahead of you! Bedrest is no fun, but I'm sure it's made better when you can sew some.

I think you'll be fine with 1 layer of the fleece and 1 layer of the wool.

They pee often but not with much volume when they're that little (at least ours did. Not like now when she's a regular fountain!) Yeah, bind the wool with wool.

Boscopup, as far as I know, once wool is felted, no more fraying! I felted some sweaters for longies/ butt sweaters and use the scraps for appliques. I don't finish the edges on the appliques, just sew them down. If I can do that with knit sweaters, I can't see how the felted jersey would fray.

ditto what the others said....

but for binding, I would just fold it over a bit instead of going to the trouble of creating a binding. But I'm kind of lazy that way sometimes : ...

And about waiting until the last minute... I'm *still* sewing diapers and such and I'm due in two days ... but... I could 'go at any time' which really means that I'll be pregnant forever (or at least until I'm induced probably)

dittoes here.

just fold over the edge, then you can make the casing inside that fold-over edge. This saves on materials as well as time and makes very tidy-looking covers. just remember to add enough seam allowance to the shape to account for the fold-over.

Thanks everyone!

Wouldn't you know it, just as I was getting ready to get a few covers going, my dh ripped apart our bedroom (which is off the dining room) and made a total mess of the sewing area I have in the dining room!

I think I will just cut some tab areas for elastic, folding over for a casing like you all have suggested. I've got some windpro, felted wool jersey and some PUL to try . And I have one knitted NB cover. Hopefully I can get this in order in just over 2 weeks.
