patching jeans with regular machine?

I decided I should start patching jeans, that it would be an easy and good skill to know. I was successful, but I decided it wasn't so easy if you don't have the right kind of machine for getting up inside the jeans leg.

I ended up cutting the patch, zigzagging the edges, and then handsewing it to the front of the jeans knee. I couldn't figure out any way to machine sew it with a regular sewing machine.

Am I missing some simple technique? Is there any way to machine sew inside a pant/jeans leg with a regular & basic sewing machine?

It works best if you have a free-arm (where part of the machine's bed folds down or removes to leave a skinny part) but can be done with a regular machine. It's sort of a pain either way, as you have to bunch up the fabric above the spot you need to patch. I recommend going from the top, since that's the widest. Pin the patch in place first using as many pins as you need to keep it from shifting when you're scrunching up the jeans to get to the patch.
