I use the $1.00/yard walmart flannel, its a little thinner so if I'm making a whole diaper out of it, i use 2 layers outside 2 layers inside and bout 8 layers for the insert soaker. Got any old terry wash clothes you can use for the insert soaker? I use those even the new bundle from walmart for $5.00 for 12 and wrap it in flannel and it works super as an insert.

diaper flannel isn't as wide as regular flannel. It's designed to be cut from the bolt with the cut edges finished and you're done. At my local fabric store, diaper flannel is often a bit more expensive per yard than regular flannels and it's not as wide so really, it's lots more expensive. I haven't had any trouble using regular flannel which is readily available. quilter's flannel is thicker and of better quality. It'll stay soft for longer but the cheaper stuff works just fine.
As for number of layers... just use regular flannel like your other flannel.

I have always used just ergular flannel. However if you can lay it on paper and read through it you should find better quality.

I've used both diaper flannel and regular Joann's flannel. I think that the Joann'a flannel is a much better deal since you get more per yard and if you are worried about quality I'd get the really nice quilter's flannel (I fould some in the clearance section of my Joann's on Saturday
). You can also use terry, french terry, jersey and interlock as long as they have 80% cotton for all your diaper parts.
