I saw the dr today. Good news and bad news...

For the past week or so, I've been having a dull achey pain low on the left side. When I would lay on my back and push in that area, I could feel a fairly large, firm, tender area. I was hoping it was nothing, and it would just go away, but it hasn't. I finally decided to make an appt today at my regular family practice clinic (I haven't found a provider for this pregnancy yet). Unfortunately, the only dr that was available to see me was an older guy that didn't do OB. Great. Anyway, he could also easily feel what I was feeling, so he wanted to do an u/s to rule out ectopic.

Good news is, I do not have an ectopic. Just a 4.5 cm left ovarian cyst. I also have a gestational sac measuring right on (6w1d) complete with a beating heart (yay!). Bad news, evidentally I have a small subchorionic bleed. Which explains the surprise from the u/s tech when I told her I hadn't had any spotting or cramping. When the dr called me with the results, he was completely useless. He didn't have a clue what it meant. He also said it was way too early to see a heartbeat, so this pregnancy may not be viable. I didn't tell him that not only did we see the heartbeat, but she was even able to measure the heart rate. He also gave me the results of the quant hcg that he ordered. He said the lady that called him with the results wasn't English speaking and was very hard to understand, but he thought she said that it was <0.1. Uhhh, i don't think so buddy. When I explained that it needed to be at least 25 to show up as a pregnancy (obviously more for my stage), he agreed that the result didn't make sense and he'd call me with the hard copy. Then he recommended I hurry up and find a provider so he can give them these results to interpret (because he obviously doesn't have a clue).

Anyway, I do have a question. Does anyone know anything about subchorionic bleeds? I haven't found a whole lot of good info on the net so far. I'm finding that it would be helpful if I knew the size and location of it though.

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks with my third child, and they saw the exact same bleed. She is a beautiful, energetic 3.5 yr old. I, too, did not have any spotting.

Second opinion for sure!

Make sure that you get another examination and another opinion ASAP. Try to get in to see a good, repuatble OBGYN who can help you with this problem and get you started for prenatal care. I would also make sure not to see this particular doctor again-ever. Sounds like he went to med school in the dark ages. Sheesh! Try not to worry too much-the other response to your message definitely sounded positive.

Did they do a transvaginal U/S? If they did, you can totally see a heartbeat at 6 wks!! I would go to another Dr. ASAP!! Shot, Im so parinoid I would prob. haul myself into the ER and tell them about the pain, just to get another persons advice ASAP!!

That's very reassuring. I'm hoping for a similar outcome. And an uncomplicated pregnancy. I don't have time for complications!

I have an appt with a OB (not who I was planning to see for this pregnancy either) on Thurs to look all of this over. I don't normally, and wouldn't normally see the dr I saw last night. He was just the only one available. He was actually quite sweet though, and fully admitted he didn't have a clue. That's why he was anxious for me to find someone that did, so he could pass me off.

They did see a heartbeat. We actually picked it up quite easily with just an abdominal u/s. We did a transvaginal one too, but that was to try to get a better picture of the cyst. I don't know why the tech didn't put her findings (heartbeat) in her report. Or maybe she did and the dr just didn't read that carefully.
I'm certainly not panicking at this point, just a little concerned. Like I posted above, I have an appt with an OB on Thurs to look over all of this.

I had a subchorionic bleed with Lulu for a month in the first trimester, and she turned out fine. I bled for a month with her. I did go on partial bedrest during it to be absolutely sure, though I am not sure it is necessary. The dr. said I didn't have to. I sure couldn't do it this time (with a 15 month old!).

Good luck

I don't know anything about the bleed, but the "cyst" is probably just your corpus luteum. It is also called the "cyst of pregnancy" and supports the babe until the placenta takes over.

Yeah, it is just the corpus luteum, but normal ones do not get 4.5cm and don't usually hurt like the dickens. I know it's not a problem though. Unless it gets considerably bigger, which is unlikely. I sure wish it would hurry up and start shrinking back to a normal size because the pain is extremely annoying. :
