Thanks to everyone for their help

ETA: I used the pattern from this pattern and the instructions from this website. With a lot of help from everyone here I had some trouble with the elastic (esp. in the waist area) but all in all I think it turned out ok. I haven't tried it on ds yet, but will tomorrow when he wakes up.

And it looks GREAT! Nice work!

You're going to be good at this. That's a really fantastic result for someone who has never sewn before!

Great job!!!

That turned out great!! Is that flannel as the outer? Are you going to use a cover? Wait till you make more it just gets easier. I think that's why it's so addicting!!!

Thanks! Since this was my first sewing project I didn't know how well it would turn out but it's ok!

I tried it on ds this morning and the fit is a little snug, he's almost 19 pounds and has a chunky stomach. His thighs are chunky too but a small kind of chunky. So, I'm going to try and make the bigger size diaper (starting it later today ) and see how that fits. I'll likely end up changing it a little bit.

The fabric I used was just old t-shirts. I'm going to make a cover for it tonight (buying the fabric, probably fleece, today).

I've got more shirts to make into diapers but I'll probably end up buying a little more fabric also, though I haven't decided on the kind yet.

I don't have a snap press, would velcro be ok for the fleece covers?

And yeah, it was easy I got stuck on a few points but all in all, it was MUCH easier than I thought it would be. And I am already daydreaming about making the next one!

It was so great, when I turned the diaper and showed it to dh (still had to add the velcro but was done otherwise) he exclaimed "Hey, it looks like a diaper!" Apparantly he'd thought that it was just going to be this pieced together thing (the only thing I'd sewn before was a failed attempt at a prefold where I couldn't even stitch straight, I hand-stitched most mending projects, and even that was pretty bad ) and was amazed that it actually looked kind of good. He was so amazed when I put the velcro on, it was so funny!

Velcro is totally fine on fleece. Make sure you put fold back tabs on the cover so it won't stick to everything when you're washing it. I find that my velcro lasts longer if I use larger velcro (like 1 1/2 inch velcro instead of 1 inch velcro.) and having a wider strip of the loop gives more adjustability again (like 2 ") My fabric store sells the hook an loop parts seperately. When I run out of aplix, I totally use that.

Can you show me a pic of a fold back velcro tab? I've heard it mentioned before but I'm not sure where to put it. I used 1 1/2 inch velcro (just reg stuff from fabric store) on that dipe. Nice and big

Make sure you buy a heavy weight fleece, or double up two lighter weights for the cover. If not you may get pressure wicking.

Good job on your first diaper!

I'd LOVE to show you a fold back tab but my camera has gone with my wife and daughter to my in-laws (I'm joining them tonight!!!!! )

Basically it's a square of loop fabric that goes beside the hook tabs so that when you take the diaper off the baby you can stick the hook down and it doesn't get caught.

Anyone out there have a good fold back tab pic? I can't find on quickly and should be packing right now

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I understand what you mean, I've never read where it was supposed to be placed before. I'll add it to the diaper that I make this weekend and then post pics to make sure its right.

Have fun at your ILs!
