Diaper liners?

Here in South Africa it is quiet common to use disposable liners, which catch the worst of the poop and keep baby's bum dry. I used these with DS#1 with CD, but don't want to use them this time round, I am thinking of making some from cheese cloth or muslin (anything thin and natural).

Any ideas, has anybody else done this?

You can make them out of think fleece (either microfleece or 100 weight fleece) the fleece provides a stay dry layer. Fleece isn't a natural material but you don't have to finish the edges and it cleans up really nicely.

We used disposable liners for the first week or so with our daughter and decided that it really wasn't worth it. We never 'caught' everything and it was just a drag to have to deal with the liners later. There's no way now that DD would lie still for one more step...

My mom was telling me this is what they used to use. I had no clue you could still get them What about baby washcloths, or just scraps of material. Is it just because you want your diapers to stay clean? I would think it would make more work than its worth!!

The disposable ones keep baby's bum dry while catching any poop so that the nappy stays clean and is easier to wash. I do not like them as they are not made of natural fibre, though I often washed and re-used them when nappies were just wet. I was hoping to find something made of natural fibre as an alternative.

FWIW, my diapers aren't stained at all, and I don't use any kind of liner, but this is also solid-food poop. Breastfed poop definitely stains, BUT... it suns out. So you might try one of these methods:

1) Rinse the poop off right away with cold water (mini-showers are supposed to be good for this)
2) Use a wet pail
3) Sun dry when you have stains

Or if you really want a liner of some sort... The only wicking liners are manmade fibers (like microfleece), but velour is nice and soft against baby's skin. I still think it's more trouble than it's worth though.

For washing diapers, just do a cold prewash (that takes out alot of the poop stains), a hot wash with detergent, then an extra rinse or two. Hang any stains in the sun and they should disappear pretty quickly. But you might find that the diapers aren't as stained as you expected.

Thanks All,

I think I will just skip the liners this time round, looks like more hassle than its worth

We use fleece liners to keep baby's bum dry. I also think that the poop cleans more easily off of these than the regular diaper fabrics (terry cloth, cotton, flannel, etc). Especially if you use a mini-shower, the poo just slides right off.
