Velour??

My fabricland has 100% cotton velour and 100% poly velour. What is the difference between the two. I'm planning on making some pockets and I think I'll do some with velour and some with sherpa seeing as I don't think I can get microfleece here. Although if I can get it I will do that as well. I'll have to go today to get it though as I'm on bedrest and my mom is coming tomorrow, she would kill me if she found out I was out shopping I need some fabric to keep us busy though!!!

Oh while noone has replied yet, does the sherpa have to be a terry?? One more ? does anyone know the content of microfleece I should be asking for? I know they said they had all of these but I want to make sure it's close to the right stuff.

If you are making fitted diapers and you want the velour to absorb pee, then you need the cotton velour as the outer and/or inners. Cotton velour makes great inners against your babies skin. You could use the poly velour as the outside of a diaper if you want, but the poly won't absorb any pee. It seems that everyone gets the cotton velour since it is more "natural" and cooler than poly. Plus the poly velour might retain more smell.

For the microfleece, it should be 100% poly. People line their diapers with microfleece because it does not absorb any pee and the pee wicks away from the baby's skin into the absorbing core of the diaper. Make sure it is really microfleece and is very thin.

yep... 100% cotton velour or your diaper won't hold anything. I'm surprised you found 100% cotton velour at fabricland. The stuff here is all 80% cotton 20% poly which will also work.

You can get microfleece at my fabriclands here too. It's with the polar fleeces. (really it's just a thin polar fleece) it's all 100% polyester. Some colours will pill more than others. I've found that yellows, oranges and reds are particularly bad about pilling.

my understanding of sherpa is that it's a brushed terry.

Basically, if you want to absorb liquid you want a natural fibre like cotton or hemp and if you want to repel fabric you want a synthetic like nylon or polyester (the exception being wool which is the super fibre and both repels and absorbs!)

I'm leaving for your part of the country today! I can't wait to go to Len's!

Thanks guys!! Oh and Beth have fun!!!! I'm going to go back around the 29th-31st, but I'll probably hit up the one in London, see if they have anything different.

I have made a few pocket dipes with pul outer, 80/20 cotton/poly velour inside and bound with fold over elastic. They work great!

Make sure the stuff you are getting is Velour and not Velvet or Velveteen (you can tell because Velour is VERY stretchy and the other two aren't). My Fabricland only ever has 80/20 Velour but it is very nice stuff. I love velour for the inner layer of diapers and then I use hemp for the middle and soaker layers.
