There's a box under the tree...

... and it's the appropriate size/shape/weight of... a serger! Yipee! I've not been this giddy about Christmas morning since I was a kid! Although I'm also this giddy because we actually got DS presents this year (last year he was too young to notice toys *that* much, since he was only 3 months adjusted age). There's some fun Fisher Price Little People stuff that I'm excited to play with. Although it's not as bad as the fact that I really think the Melissa & Doug cutting food set is so much fun!!! My parents gave DS that last night, and I just had a blast "cutting" the food (it's held together with velcro). That was just so neat.

Anyway, tomorrow afternoon, I'll start playing with my serger, making lots of wipes, I'm sure!

I hope that it's just the one you want!

It was! I got the Kenmore. I haven't tried it out yet. I'm still looking through the manual before tackling it.

Oh, and I didn't mention that my dad got me a $75 gift certificate to OSDS!!! But... he didn't purchase it until they'd gone on holiday, and now it won't be processed until Jan 2, so I can't take advantage of the free shipping. Oh well. I can still get quite a bit for $75 including shipping.

I need to hit Hancocks at the end of the week since they have Maxi-lock thread on sale for $1.77/spool. I'm also going to get at least one Simplicity pattern to do PJs. DS has none, so I figure that'd be a good thing to make with a serger! And I have my eye on the fire dog knit fabric at OSDS for the pants, and some red interlock for the shirt (I haven't seen if Hancocks has interlock or not... I need to check that out... Walmart has NOTHING in the way of nifty knit fabrics).

Congrats on the serger! That's so cool!

I gotta admit, I'm absolutely addicted to cutting that velcro food. Something about it is so satisfying. I might need to go get some out now, as a matter of fact....

Thanks guys! I have finally SERGED. I just spent the last 30 minutes playing with it, after I read the manual, watched the video (realizing that they missed a spot when threading the lower looper on my machine - good thing I checked it!), completely rethreaded the machine so I'd know how - it's not hard, but just took some time since it was my first time, then I finally got a scrap of fabric and started to work. Setting the tensions to all "3" worked perfectly on this particular fabric (a cheapy cotton woven from Walmart - their solid color wovens). I practiced straight edges, curved edges, an inside corner... And I worked on backstitching to start and stop. BOY do I need practice with that! but that's really the only thing that has given me any trouble. Yipee! I even did a "tab" - just drew the shape of a tight curved newborn size tab and serged along the line. When you look at it at a distance, it's perfect. But if you look up close, underneath the loops, the fabric is folded in some spots. So I'll need to work on that too, but I probably just need to go a little slower. It's hard to serge slow! That thing just whips the fabric through. But anyway, curves aren't scaring me now that I've tried them. I think I've heard that some sergers have the feed dogs kind of far back? Maybe it's just the ones without differential feed? Mine has differential feed, so there are two feed dogs - one at the front of the foot and one at the back. So I think that might be what makes curves easier.

I haven't played with differential feed yet. Nor have I serged two pieces of fabric together yet. But maybe later tonight I will get around to making some cloth wipes.

So my 30 minutes of use review of the Kenmore serger - Easy to thread and easy to use.

Congrats! I have a Kenmore serger that I love too! Happy serging, I still get a little tingly when I serge a new item, then again I've only had mine a few months.
