This afternoon my dd had a surprise visit from an old gf whom she had not seen in several years. This woman had a 6 week old baby girl.
Little by little dd introduced the "V" issue into the conversation. The woman seemed interested at first but a little dense. Anyway her main worry was that her dd would get POLIO if she's not vaccinated. DD didn't seem to make a dent so I butted in with a very simple explanation:
"There was this pesticide that they used to spray everywhere (DDT) and from that spray many little children as well as animals got a paralysis. Then they developed a vaccine that was supposed to prevent that paralysis. They called it the POLIO vaccine because after they had developed it they called the paralysis POLIO.
After they had manufactured the vaccine they told parents that if they inject their kids with this vaccine their kids will not get POLIO. At the same time they outlawed the spray (DDT) and of course there was very little polio after that. So they said, 'see, the vaccine works'."
I think I lost her with my explanation BUT (unfortunately) my 8 y. old grandson who was playing in the other room came to the table and said,
"I can't believe it. That's what happened?
That is nothing but a cruel joke."
