Newborn fitted questions

I sew all my own diapers. Iam TTC #5 and would like to use wool and fitteds I think with some PUL covers mixed in there somewhere.
MY question is is Flannel or terry cloth (like at Joanns) absorbant enough for a newborn? I'd hate to spend 10 + shipping for ayard if Ican use 2-3 $ flannel ya know.

Yes! When I first started to make my own diapers I used joanns flannel and towels from walmart as the soakers. I found later that I prefer knit terry you can find at joanns for the soaker because it stays softer over time. But yes, this combo is very absorbent even on an older baby.
good luck!

I might try it then on my 21 month old. I'm using PUL pockets now and they are so leaky. I cant get it under control so I've started crocheting some soakers and going to make some recycled(wool soakers) ones as well.
How do you make the soaker inside the fitted? Internal?or with a lay in soaker for easy drying times?
TIA

I like to make both internal and external soakers. So I make two body layers, then a two-layer soaker. I stitch the soaker into the inner body layer, then elasticize the body layers, T&T or serge. Then I make a snap-in (you could just stitch at the back) soaker of four layers, look for boscopups pics of this, maybe she'll post this, with the top a layer of microfleece. So this gives 2+2+4 layers of absorbancy plus one layer of fleece for wicking. This should last 2-3 hours on the average baby.
I dry my diapers for 60 minutes on low and they are dry when they come out. It helps to throw a dry towel in with the wet stuff to speed dry time.

I'll try this I think.
I could buy some prefolds and use those (i have 6 prefolds now) But since I sew it jsut makes sense to sew some. What about diaper flannel?? Is this better than regular flannel?

I just bought 3 yards of burley knit terry. This fabric is SOOOO heavy. I cant use it hardly it so bulky. Hemp always starts to smella fter a while so I'm kinda excited there is a alternative.

Diaper flannel you can get at Walmart is great stuff! I like the outer in prints but the inner in a solid color of the diaper flannel. It is a lot thicker and more absorbent. It depends on what you like as far as soaker goes. If you are going to lay in a soaker (prefolds) just make the body and close it up and lay in the soaker. I did this with my dd for the first 6-7 months. Then I decided I wanted the convenience of an internal soaker for my squirmy little crawler I think the best one I have settled on is a light soaker inside (2 layers of the burley knit terry) and an attached inside soaker with one layer of bkt topped with flannel (like an attached doubler basically) That would be super absorbent on an older baby and also easy to contend with.

Since LeosMama mentioned how I did mine, here are some pictures.

Basically, I sewed hemp french terry body and sherpa body together, then made a soaker of 2 layers of hemp sewn together, then a layer of hemp sewn to a layer of velour (I velour!). Took those two sets and sewed them together just at the ends, then sewed the soaker to the back of the diaper (you could also attach it at the front - still leaving the middle portion open). There are no more than 2 layers anywhere in the diaper, yet it's SO absorbant! I also don't have to hunt for soakers in the wash. I think snap in soakers are great for AI2s, but they just don't make much sense to me in a fitted?

This diaper is pretty easy to put on quickly, and it makes an awesome nighttime diaper (with a doubler added - tonight I'm using a hemp/velour tri-fold).

I'm now thinking maybe I should buy some prefolds or make some pocket fitteds to use with my wool I'm going to be making this week? I have a ton of inserts that I coudl use as doublers or inside a fitted pocket.....
But that would take away the fun of making some nice fitteds LOL
