I have my first appt when I am nearly 8 weeks along, due to some spotting my mw wants to do a transvag u/s. I am not thrilled about the idea but I would love the reassurance of the h/b but I have another appt. 2 weeks later so if I could wait until my 10 week appt, I assume at that point an abdominal u/s would be possible, is that true?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.
How early for a regular u/s?

spotting
Is the spotting that severe to necessitate an ultrasound? Some spotting is normal. I hope everything goes well.- Krista

They'll probably still do a transvaginal one. I'll be getting one in January as everyone does in the military healthcare system. They call it a 'dating ultrasound'.

With ds, I had an u/s at 9.5 weeks and it was a transvaginal one - but every mw is different. And, if they want to "date" the pregnancy - it's more reliable to do it earlier. But, I know you were part of the One Thread - so you could probably tell them when you conceived with greater accuracy than any u/s!

I had an U/S at 6w1d and we had no trouble seeing everything with an abdominal u/s. She dated it and saw a heartbeat.
If I were you, I'd request an abdominal one first, and only do the transvaginal one if needed. Just make sure you have a REALLY full bladder to maximize the chances of seeing everything.
Or just forgo it if you can. I agree that some spotting isn't necessarily a good reason to have an u/s. It can certainly be worth it for the reassurance though. (In case you're wondering, I had one so early to rule out ectopic - turned out to be a large cyst.)

Ah great advice- that's what I was thinking, attempt an abdominal first and then go to transvag if need be.
No the u/s is not a necessity, my spotting is very brown and my numbers look good, but the spotting combined with a recent m/c makes me on edge enough to want one to relax a little.. I would just prefer a less invasive one.
Steph- yes I have my date within a day at most and I would trust my chart more than I would an u/s...
