Which does she want? Does she have a bunch of CDs already? Does she have a bunch of music on itunes? Is she a careful kid, or does she tend to be careless and break things?

1. It's up to me.
2. Not allot. 5-10 cds best.
3. What is Itunes
4. Yes, I think I can trust her not to drop it or get it wet.

So help me. I have the money for the nano, but i am just afraid that she will out grow it, but, what the hey!

You can find an MP3 player that is not an "Ipod" that is much much much cheaper. It is more expensive than a cheap cd player. But comparable to a more expensive walkman.
My dd got one made by Magnivox for christmas.

I GOT TWO FOR MY SONS AND THE MP3 PLAYER IS QUITE CHEAP AND YOU DON'T HAVE TOO LISTEN TO THEIR LOUD MUSIC SO YOUR GETTING A BARGAIN NO NOISE AND CHEAP PRICE!!

I would just go with what she wants.

I think an MP3 player would be a better idea... like mentioned you can find less expensive ones than the nano, so that'd be a good way to judge how much use she'd get from it without spending too much. BUT, an MP3 player has to download music from your computer, so if you don't have music you've downloaded on your computer (or cd's you've ripped onto the computer) then she wouldn't be able to use it.

I agree with this but want to add that she would go through ALOT more batteries with the cd player than she would the mp3 player.

That's true... I'd forgotten about that! Definately a good point.

I totally agree about the batteries. They are a hot commodity in our house. My DD (14) has a CD player and goes through the AA's like they are going out of style. Her grandma bought her an MP3 player for Christmas. It is AWESOME. I want one now. It's so lightweight and RECHARGABLE! It was cheaper than the Ipod and it holds more music. The Nano comes in 2GB or 4GB and this one she got has 6GB. It was $129.

Would you mind sharing what brand it is? Sounds like a fantastic deal.

My BIL works for Apple. He recommends the iPod shuffle for kids, NOT the Nano. One drop and that Nano screen could be busted. The shuffle is small, can be worn on a lanyard around the neck.

As for outgrowing the nano, what do you mean by that? She doesn't have to hold all of her music on it. Syncing with iTunes (the software used for Apple iPods) is VERY simple and fast. Remember that she will need some sort of software to convert her CD's to a format that a digital music player can play (i.e. mp3) and iTunes is probably the simplest out there. You can also allow her access to the iTunes music store which is a fast, easy and cheaper way to purchase music than going to the store to purchase CD's which you then have to convert.

What about a Shuffle from iPod? My son has one and it's fairly fool-proof even for kids this age. The only drawback is it doesn't have a playlist, but that can be changed when you go into iTunes and download music.

My son has gone through 3-4 CD players in the past 2 years and with the cost of batteries, it's been a waste of money. This Christmas we got him an iPod Nano and he's been fine with it. He treats it like gold. He also knows if he breaks it,he's not getting another one with our money!

I suggest the shuffle or a cheaper MP3 player. All are fairly good.

We got both of our kids (ages 12 and 16) the Sony MP3 player. It got great reviews from Consumer Reports and is cheaper than the Ipods.

I think there is a knock-off called an x-pod, but i don't know who makes it.

I am partial to the nano. I know there are other mp3 player out there but I like buying from Apple because they are very innovated. It's my version of going organic technogically-wise We also have Apple computers so synching them is EASY. My dd has had one for a year. While she tries not to, she has dropped the darn thing a couple of times. It has thus far held up well, considering. My only gripe is hers now has virturely no battery life left. There are a number of ipods that have a defective battery. Apple has fixed it, I think. I (and dd and ds) don't like the Shuffle. it lacks the ability to do "on site" play list, no games on it, no video capabitly... all the issues have having no screen!

Just my 2c

We don't have teen kids, but My DH got something called a Zen Micro for his birthday this year. Cheaper then an Ipod, Sturdier then an Ipod, and has all the same functions the Ipod does....Rechargeable batteries.

How do you feel about downloading music illegally online? That should really be your thought about this. iTunes run at about 99cents PER SONG, which can be pretty expensive, or you could pay 20or so a month for a pay-to-share program. But eventually your DD will find out about pirating music for FREE,and you just got to be able to deal with that battle when you come to it.

.99 cents per song equals about the same as a new CD. But buying songs online insures that you only get the songs you want instead of buying a CD with a couple songs you like, but nothing else. I've found that getting music online to be much LESS expensive than buying CD's.

Of course, you do run the risk of illegal downloads like you mentioned... plus it also opens you up to more chances of a virus.

Downloading illegally

Wow- what a good point to bring up! I am somewhat lucky, I think. Ds is too young to know how to do it. Dd won't do it, even though she knows how, because I flat out told I don't want to go to jail. Ok, ok and beyond that, it really is stealing. I would no sooner let her steal a CD than download. There are a few songs we have downloaded though. Those are mainly ones we already owned at one time and lost or were otherwise corrupted. It really is something to consider though when you get an mp3 player
