I have mice too - I have tried just about all your ideas!
You all have good ideas. They only one I haven't tried is the borax. I will try this tonight. Peppermint ess. oil didn't work; steel wool they just push aside, they eat the bait right off the traps (I will go buy the "easy set" ones tomorrow!), my cat is interested in their smell inside, but has never caught one inside. She gets them outside, but not enough! Spray foam to plug holes is a deterrent, but if they really want in, they chew through. Poison worked for a little while, but they came back.
My pest control guy (yes, I have one after much debate to get rid of all the black widows living in our backyard - scarry w/ our 2 yo olds!) says the only way to prevent them is to plug all the holes - anything the size of your thumb or larger they can get in. My prob is that my counters are in a U shape - there are corners that I cannot get to or even see!
I hate the little buggers - I want them GONE!!!
One ? though - how do traps work to get rid of them? We have a grassy field behind our house, so it seems there's a never ending supply of them.
