peppermint essential oil

I purchased some peppermint essential oil the other day and when I got home there is a warning on the package which says to not use if pregnant or on medication. I am using it externally in my foot bath and I was wondering why you couldn't use it if you were pregnant or on medication. Anyone know why? Is there something else I can use? I am not pregnant but I am TTCing.

Peppermint can cause contractions, which is why it has a warning label. I personally have used it with no ill effect (as a facial mist -- with a drop per bottle). However, if you felt any kind of contraction with it, I'd discontinue use immediately. (I've also been drinking mint teas throughout my pregnancy... again, use your best judgement!)

I'm not sure why the "medication" part. Maybe they mean homeopathics? Mint can interfere with homeopathics. (Even mint flavored toothpaste! They sell special brands that are OK to take with homeopathics.)

HTH!

interesting article.

peppermint oil also should not be used during breastfeeding as it can decrease milk supply.
That info is available on kellymom.com .

Thanks for the responses. That was a really interesting article. Peppermint seems to be everywhere also. I did not know about the breastfeeding either. I guess I won't be using it for awhile.
