JUst curious ..
What weight should a 9 yr old girl be, say around 4 ft tall? (average)

My 9 yr old dd weight 53 lbs. She eats but mostly she will only eat a few bites to half the plate (which i do not load up) ,but there are other times where she just whoofs it down like she hasnt eaten in days.
Is this normal for a 9 yr old...most of the girls I see in her class seam heavier then her.
Im not worried but should I be?

Myoldest is only 6.5, but I wouldn't worry. My 6.5 year old weighes about 48 pounds. Her 5 year old sister weighes 37 pounds. Her 3.5 yr old brother weighs 36 pounds.

I remember I weighed just over 50 pounds until after i was out of the 5th grade. I ate and played, just was skinny.

That's about the same size as my oldest DD who will be 9 in April. She's never been a very big eater but has always been really high energy so being so thin makes sense. I wouldn't worry unless she seems sluggish or sick. Honestly, I think it's healthier for a child to be thin than to be as heavy as some of the kids I see. Now, finding pants that fit is a major problem--it sucks that they don't make slims slim enough.

Yes it is hard to find pants that actually fit her cause she is so thin and her legs are long..
she is rather active as well with dance and gymnastics, so I figure there she is getting her exercise as well.....

Yes some of the kids these days are looking a bit ...er plump.
so this is why I was wondering what is average size ...thought maybe she was too thin ya know....

Thanks

My DD is just now at 53 lbs, she is only 7 but wears an 8 slim, for the length in the legs. I can not find ANY clothes for her that fit, without spending a fortune. Does anyone becides GAP make slim sizes? Mostly she wears dresses and tights.

I did find a pair of size 8 slim Levi's brand jeans at Kohl's for $17 that fit her perfectly. While that's cheaper than Gap, I still think $17 is a lot to pay for kids clothes, but what can you do? The adjustable waistband jeans are a joke though--some of them don't even cinch in tight enough and if they do, they're still too huge through the hips and stomach. Mostly she just wears pants that are too short or those exercise-type pants they sell at Target with a drawstring waist.

if she looks and acts healthy then she is. She doesn't sem to have a problem eating when she is hungry so I wouldn't worry.

I think that sounds pretty normal.

DD is 49 inches, 49 lbs and just turned 7 years old. Her friends who are her height tend to be slightly heavier (50-60 lbs).

If you calculate her BMI it would be 16.2.

According to this chart:
http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/growt.../girlsbmi.html

At 9, a BMI of 16.2 is right under the 50th percentile.

Now, I don't think that being an outlier on those charts necessarily means anything bad, but being right there in the middle probably means she is pretty right now.

ya ..I am not worried for her. If I see her eating less then I may get concerned.

Plus my 18 mo old just reached 20 lbs finally lol.......and she eats like a pig, so it is probably just their body types.

thanks ...

That is about what my daughter weighed at age 9.

She is tall, and skinny. She's 13 now, and weighs about 90 lbs. Her friends are all heavier and um.......curvier, than she is. But, she will catch up. I think most kids her age are too heavy anyway. *I can say this cuz I have at least 20lbs to lose*

My DD will be 10 in a few weeks and is right at 100 lbs. She's approx. 4' 8" tall. She's, I'd say, fairly average with those around her... wears a size 14/16, very solid girl and she's active in a sport all year round. There are however, plenty of girls at her school that are very skinny (to me) so I'm sure it varies by body type as much as anything. My boys will be 6 in a couple weeks... one is 42lbs (very skinny) and the other is 52lbs. They're 3' 9" and 3'8" tall, respectively. The heavier one is very solid... no one guesses his weight. Picking him up is like lead

My almost 9 year old dd weighs 52lbs.She is really lean.Finding pants is so hard.Mostly size 6 pants are perfect in the waist but too small in the ankle area! She is very healthy and active.

My DS will be 9 in April and he's 55lbs. He's always the smallest boy and there is usually only 1-2 girls smaller than him at school. Most of the other kids seem to be chunky though and when I've volunteered in the classroom I'm always shocked at the junk the kids bring in for snack--soda, chips, cookies etc.

My kids eat a lot of food but it tends to be a lot healthier that what other kids in our area eat.

DH and I were both really small until we his puberty. My son the will be 4 in April is 31lbs and my 2yo is 27lbs. I'm sure it's a combo of genetics and the lack of junk food.

my ds will be 10 in march and he is almost 60lbs he's definitely one of the thinnest kids in his class, but average in height (about 4 1/2 ft )and is very healthy and active.

mamato2boys i agree with your comment about genetics and lack of junk food.

WOW kids can be so different can't they? my 9yo girl is 5ft tall and 80lbs. And she's VERY thin.

Given the national problem of childhood obesity, she is one of the lucky ones!

If she eats three meals a day plus healthy snacks and is full of energy and the joy of life, great! No need to worry mamma!

If she is tired all the time and lacks energy and "get up and go" take her to a Dr for blood tests and watch everything she puts in her mouth vigilantly. She may be unwell or not be eating properly.

I find a smorgasbord approach to food is best for growing children. (and for adults too) Everyone helps themselves rather than me dishing it out onto the plate. And it prevents so much wastage as well. Protein is the most important food for growing children, and milk is a great food source too. If the fruit and vegetables are always available as side dishes or snacks, just add some carbs like wholemeal bread or potatoes and you have a healthy diet.

sounds like you have nothing to worry about, we are all different shapes and sizes and most of us are healthy. overweight is very hard to lose so it's great if she doesn't have that burden at 9 years old!

My 7 (almost 8) yo daughter and my 10yo son both weigh about the same as your daughter. My son is skinny and my daughter is really REALLY muscular (she also does dance and gymnastics). They just have totally different body types. I find that most of my daughter's friends are either real skinny or else chunky. I don't see many girls with her body type. My kids are both very short--one is a bit over 4 feet and the other a bit under. I myself am 5 ft and 100 lbs or so, so they probably won't be big.

I'm in the boat that says if she is eating when hungry, chances are she just has a slim build. It seems kids grow like an inch worm crawl- tall and lean, all stretched out until the rest of the them catches up. And yes, finding pants that fit a slim waist, is difficult. DD is 5 feet and 80 lbs and about the only place we go the Limited Too. Their slims are actually slim

My dd will be 9 in May and weighs 52 lbs. She is about average in her class. She has the same problem with pants. I have taken some of the 6x's and sewn ribbons or wide sashes around the bottoms of the legs. They make them a few inches longer and she has very unique flares. She loves them!
