I've been looking everywhere for washing soda. The closest I came is finding a large box of baking soda in the laundry detergent aisle at Wal-Mart. I want to make the homemade laundry detergent. Can I use baking soda instead of washing soda? I have very hard water if that makes a difference.

Washing soda is preferred because it's more alkaline and will cut grease better than the lower alkaline baking soda.

I buy my washing soda at our local Pick 'N Save grocery store in the aisle with the laundry detergents.

The only place I can find washing soda is at Safeway. None of the big box stores carry it, and that's just as well. It is in a yellow box (not the orangey yellow of the BS box, but a brighter yellow) and it says Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda on it. It will be with the laundry detergent. I would suggest going to the regular grocery stores around you and looking for it.

I had the same problem before. actually posted it here too! LOL
I found it at one grocery store in my area. In the cleaning aisle next to borax. Its hard to find for some reason - walmart for sure didn't carry it. You could ask a smaller grocer to order it for you.

I also find it in the laundry detergent aisle in my grocery store. Not all stores carry it, but in the ones that do, I have usually found it on a top shelf, up with the borax and blueing and other not-so-commonly-used stuff.
Here's what the Arm & Hammer box looks like:

It's much more bright yellow than the baking soda box, but the same shape/size as the big one.
