My 3 year old dd is at that awkward in-between stage where she sort of needs a nap but not quite. Sometimes if she naps she'll take a long time to get to sleep at night, yet if she doesn't she'll complain of being tired by dinnertime and conk out if I put her in bed at 7:00. But if she skips her nap for more than two days straight it's like it catches up with her. So we try to nap about every other day, and that's working out all right at the moment.

My son will be four in May, and oh, how he needs his nap. He still takes a two hour (give or take -- though more give) nap every day. He can survive every so often without a nap if something comes up and do pretty well. He is a really good sleeper, he will even go to bed on his own if he is really tired. A few times before nap we realize he is gone and sure enough he is in bed, sound asleep.

I used to work in a day care with 3-5 year olds. There were 36 kids in my room -- 20 of them ranged from 4 1/2 to almost six. Of the 36 kids only two did not nap daily. One never slept and we let her read on her cot, the other slept occasionally but not always. I personally think we really wore the kids out because I can't believe that those numbers would be the average.

My 3 and a few month old doesn't nap much anymore. The day her climbed out of the crib and announced "I'm not going to nap today" was the beginning of the end of naps!

He does sometimes fall asleep in the car on the ride home and I let him sleep there, if he is that tired to fall asleep. Sometimes I can even do the 'transfer' and put him on a couch. Maybe on days your little one really needs it a well-timed trip may do the trick?

On other days I make sure that there is some quiet time during the day. book reading, coloring, computer game....something to rest him w/out sleeping.

jbcjmom - how sensible of your son to go to sleep when he needs to!

I think us moms need our little guys to nap too!

Het Forestma - love your user name!

My 3 1/2 year old doesn't nap unless he gets up unusually early. Generally we get up at 8 a.m. and by 9:30 p.m. he is sleeping soundly.
However even if he wakes up 1/2 an hour earlier in the morning, he will get very cranky by the early afternoon. Then he will sleep for 1-2 hours. I'm not a big fan of these days because then I can't get him to sleep before 11 p.m., sometimes midnight.
Ever since he became a toddler he has had no interest in napping, he has been preoccupied with conquering the world.
I am NOT a morning person...I'm so glad I don't have to leave the house. Ahhhh.

My DS has never needed a lot of sleep. He stopped taking naps at 2.5 yrs old. Since then he'll take one nap per week (if I'm lucky) usually in the car seat.

My dear, dear son, stopped napping at about 18 - 20 mo.!!! He is now 5 1/2 yo and we do have "quiet" time during the day. He could be so, so tired and worn out, but he doesn't fall asleep! He needs more sleep (I feel), but he is tough to settle down at night (even w/baths, massage, story and cuddle time ). Even as a baby, sleep wasn't his strong point. I have now come to the realization that this is just how my dear little one is .

My ds is four and stopped napping at age 2.5 just when his brother was born :

If he seems really tired and in need of quiet time (or I'm in need of his quiet time ) I put a book on tape on in his room and he'll sit or lie in his bed and listen.
