We Need Your Help To Get the
Breastfeeding Bill (H 4347) Enacted!

H 4347 is being introduced in the House of Representatives-Judiciary Committee (Subcommittee: Special Law) in the coming legislative session. The bill reads: “TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 20-7-97 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A WOMAN MAY BREASTFEED HER CHILD IN ANY LOCATION WHERE THE MOTHER IS AUTHORIZED TO BE AND TO FURTHER PROVIDE THAT SUCH BREASTFEEDING IS NOT INDECENT EXPOSURE.”

The following legislators have signed on as co-sponsors: Reps. Limehouse, Harrell, Bailey, Battle, Brady, Vaughn, Cobb-Hunter, Kirsh, Ballentine, Clyburn, Young, Mahaffey, Hinson, Vick and J. Brown

What can I do to help?
•The most important thing you can do is contact both your state senator and your state representative. You are their constituent and they will listen.
•Ask your friends and family to do the same.
How do I find out who represents me?
•To find out who your senator and representative are, go to http://www.scstatehouse.net and click on “Find Your Legislator.” This lets you enter your zip code and the program determines who your legislators are. The website also gives addresses, phone numbers and email.
How do I contact them?
•You can call, email or write a letter.
•It does not matter which method you chose as long as you contact them. If you call, please make sure you actually speak to them.
What do I say?
•Tell them that H 4347 is being introduced in this legislative session that supports and protects a mother’s right to breastfeed. Ask them to vote for it.
•The most effective letters and emails are short, to the point and from the heart.
•For example: “I want to give my baby the best possible nutrition, and it is not always possible to be at home when the baby needs to nurse.” Or “My wife is breastfeeding our child and I want her to continue however sometimes she feels embarrassed and is easily influenced by negative attitudes towards breastfeeding in public places I think this legislation would help her to overcome those feelings.” “I have a history of cancer in my family and I want to breastfeed because the benefits include a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer however I am concerned about breastfeeding in public if I knew there was law protecting me I would feel better.” Or “Though I am not breastfeeding, I understand the important health benefits of breastfeeding for children and want to do whatever I can to support the mothers in my community.” “I breastfed both my children and as a result they had less visits to the pediatrician then neighbor’s children who were not breast fed. I think this legislation is crucial to children’s health and wellness and I am asking you to vote for it.”
Whom should I call if I have any questions?
