gourds..

I dried some really cute small gourds but now I don't know how to make them usable. I just want to put some type of finish on them so my kids can play with them.

I read to wash them in warm water and gently scrub them, and then to finish them with walnut oil. does that sound right to you?

I've put nontoxic varnish on ones I've done in the past. They make very soft sounding rattles. I'd be worried about an oil softening them up. Same with the water, so dry them quickly after washing.

When I dried mine, I rubbed rubbing (aka: isopropol) alcohol on them every so often to kill any potential molds/germs and to encourage drying.
