co-op

Can someone explain to me just how a co-op works and what it is? I have a general idea but I'm just not getting it completely, I don't think. I feel dumb but please enlighten me.

a bunch of people get together and place a large order--large enough to get great volume discounts or wholesale prices. One person usually gets the stuff shipped to her, you pay her, she divides it up and sends it out. I've gotten some great deals on yarn, fabric, prefolds, patterns, notions. HTH.
