Is there poly fleece and cotton fleece?? I picked up some remnants awhile back and so there's nothing written on the label except for the yardage and price (and even those are gone now because I ripped them off to wash the fabric).

What's called cotton fleece is usually like sweatshirt material. If you got the remnants at Walmart or something, I'll bet it's poly.

And sweatshirt fleece is also called french terry?? It's going to take me awhile to get everything straight!

don't worry, you'll be a whiz at this soon!

There's a lot of sweatshirt material out there that has significant polyester content too so be careful that you're getting cotton and not a blend. A lot of the bolts of material at my local fabric stores (especially fabricland) have the every so helpful labels of "mixed fibres" or "unknown fibre content" or my personal favourite " " (yep, the big fat nothing! DRIVES ME NUTS!)

Apparently it's often too much to ask to have the content of the fibre listed sometimes. If you're sticking to recycled materials make sure you're buying stuff you can identify (in other words, stuff that still has the tags attached and readable!)

No, french terry has little loops that you can see. Sweatshirt fleece is fleecey on one side - just take a look at any of your sweatshirts and you'll see what that looks like. I can't think of anything around the house that you'd have that'd be french terry...

Pretty much, you'll have to see/feel the fabrics in person with a label attached and THEN you'll have some clue as to what everything is. At least, that's how it was for me!

There are lots of types of fleece.
Jogging fleece comes in 100% cotton, Cotton /polyblend, and 100%polyester as well as organic cotton fleece.
Polar fleece is fuzzy on both sides and is 100% polyester.
French terry is different again, it has loops on the back with the other side is smooth , french terry usually comes in 100% cotton or a cotton poly blend.
French terry is less stretchy than regular knit terry.

The best way to find out what you have is to cut a very small peice and lite it with a match.
100% cotton will burn completly leaving only ash, it will smell "woody"
Cotton /poly blend with produce some ash and leave a little plastic ball and smell like burning oil.
100% poly will just melt and smell like burning oil./

Good luck and hang in there, you will be a fabric expert before you know it

So are some baby towels made of french terry? They're loopy on one side and look almost knit on the other.
