I made a fitted with dog flannel outer, natural colored solid flannel inner, then a sewn-in, quick-dry soaker of 3 layers hemp french terry and one layer velour. I serged this diaper, and I managed to mess something up at almost every step.
Actually, the cutting out went ok (new rotary cutter blade works well!!!), and I sewed the elastic in correctly. Snaps went ok too (did the sockets on the outside piece with a strip of flannel for stabilizer).
Next came serging the soaker. I'm serging along all happily, when suddenly I notice that I'm not really serging anymore... Apparently, the lower looper thread came out (might have broken, but it had a clean end like it'd been sliced - ie, looked like when it was cut last with scissors). I opened up the looper door and found the upper looper through one of the lower looper hooks. That was weird too. So obviously something happened with the lower looper thread to make it all funky, and threading it again didn't completely help. So I rethreaded the whole machine and then it was serging just fine.
Of course, after rethreading everything, I put that soaker under the presser foot and started serging. When I got done, I realized I had left the tension dials ALL set to 0 during the threading process and forgot to set them back to 3 for serging. Whoops! So the underside of that half of the soaker looks very funky.
I finally got the soakers serged completely, then sewed them into the inner body. This time, I sewed to front and back. We'll see how it goes. I suspect that I will probably prefer just sewing it into the back. I'll try it out tomorrow though.
I then serged the whole diaper together, and I think next time I need to turn off the knife, since I'd already cut the diaper out completely. On some of the curves, I had the looper thread sticking out past the edge of the fabric, likely because I was trying not to cut off some important pieces coming up after that area. So I think if I turn off the knife, I shouldn't have any trouble with those curves. I managed to slow down appropriately, so I don't have any funky loopies on the bottom from going too fast (what happens on my mama pads).
Maybe tomorrow I'll get around to taking/posting pictures of the diaper. I'm too lazy tonight.
But I can say that I definitely need lots more practice with serging diapers!!! This one is totally useable, and from a distance, you can't tell there's anything wrong with it. It's just up close that you see the weird serging things. Oh well.
ETA: Here are the pics!
