Which paint for unfinished pine?

My four year old daughter is making a "rock box" (a box for rocks ) for my sister's birthday and it is made of unfinished pine. Which paint should we use, and one that is safe for her to paint with as well...?? And should I finish it with anything? Thank you!!! I am so not good in this area!

If you want to paint, the regular acrylic craft paint is normally non-toxic. If you'd prefer to stain it, I really like the non-toxic wood stains at http://www.woodburst.com. If you are painting or staining that should be all the finish it needs .

Jennifer, thanks for the tips and the link!! I just realized I have a whole whack of really nice oil paints, but that would be crazy to use, hey?
