We HAD a cushion of 3 months of expenses, but we've been living off it while DH and I have both been unemployed. We 'saved' it by just not touching one red cent of our tax return money for 2 years running.
Here's our "budget", as far as what we owe on a monthly basis. Some of this is either deferred or getting paid late since we're running out of emergency fund and just getting started working.
Rent: $800 (goes up to $1050 at the end of the month in our new place)
Gas & Electric: $150 (budget billing in the great cold north)
Phone and internet: $100
Car insurance: $58
Groceries: $400
Student Loans: $1000 (deferred until 11/07)
Entertainment: $100 (Wow, Netflix, indian buffet, etc.)
Cell Phone: ~$10
When we're both working full-time again, we'll have parking expenses and daycare to add to that, but we're trying to keep expenses low (without living somewhere scary) until we can get the student loans paid down/off.
