I guess I can't offer experience, because our daughter is only 2.5. But I might look into them if it turns out we cannot afford private school for two children. However, my husband has some philosophical objections to them, so I think we'll sooner move to the suburbs if he has his way and we cannot afford private school. But anyway, I think he formed his opinion after reading Jonathan Kozol's Savage Inequalities, so maybe you'd want to check it out. I believe his basic objection is that school districts pump more money into magnet schools so they can point to them as examples of schools that are doing ok in the district but they do so at the expense of regular neighborhood schools. So it perpetuates the cycle of failing city schools with just a handful of high-performing ones rather than trying to elevate the ones that need help. I guess I agree on some level, but I also know that real change in schools takes probably a generation of students or more and that isn't going to work for me for my child.
