High Blood Pressure!

Thread Starter
Hi,
I'm not sure where to start exactly. But here it goes. On the 18th of January I had a routine ultrasound appointment at my local hospital. I had to go through the emergency room since the main registry isn't open on the weekends. After waiting for about an hour w/well everyone and anyone we finally got seen (my mother and I). The registry lady told us we needed a white form that the doctor gave us in order to have the US done. Well no one including my doctor told me anything about this. The hospital blamed my doctor and later my doctor blamed the hospital. The lady said we had to go home and wait all over again to have the US. Well let me tell you, you do not want to mess w/a 7 month pg woman who has had a nasty virus all week and her mother who recently sprained her ankle!! I got upset and cried and the lady even told me I had no right to get upset w/her. So I went up to the front desk and the nurses said they would contact a doctor who was on call that was w/my clinic. So finally I got my US but was still nervewracked to say the least. After the US I thought I should find out about my virus and when they took my vitals ie temp and blood pressure it was basicly through the roof.
So they rushed me to the ob triage, took my blood, baby monitor, pee, and blood pressure for about 3 hours. They had me go home w/a container for a 24 hr urine sample. Everything has come back normal as far as tests go. But my blood pressure is still up and they have put me on bed rest. The scarey part is is they told me that I would not be able to go to my due date 03/07/03 and they would most likely induce me by that 37th week. Now I have done alot of emotional prep and have a doula in order to try to have a natural birth and to be induced is so scarey because I know it can be the catalist to many other interventions. I am planning on seeing another doctor soon as well. I realize of course that the most important thing is to have a healthy baby and mother. I have no other signs of pre-eclampisa (sp) other than the high blood pressure. I was wondering what other people's take was on high blood pressure in pregnancy and labor. If both doctors agree that I should have my baby at 37 weeks then I will feel better. I was wondering if alternative induction is possible and works so I don't have to use pitocin. I'm afraid w/pitocin I will most likely need an epidural which I really didn't want in the first place. This is my first baby and I was already nervous about the pregnancy and labor (normal I think) and now Im even more scared. Is induction really neccessary when mother and baby are over all doing well except for the high blood pressure? The doctor told me that the placenta stops growing and starts to deteriorate (sp) around the 37th week and w/the high blood pressure that is too much for the baby to handle. I could use any experiences or advice.
Please be gentle w/your comments. I do want the best for my child and would never put him or me at risk.
Thanks
Sincerely,
Amber Faires

Amber, first of all . I can't believe that lady told you *how* you have a "right" to feel. Of *course* you were upset.

It is no wonder your blood pressure was so high. Mine went up just reading about what you had to go through! I think that it is very important that you get a second opinion about this.

I have never heard what that doctor said about the placenta starting to deteriorate, unless he means it is beginning preparation for labor. That sounds so strange to me. In any case, the placenta is doing precisely what it is *designed* to do, so I would consider that when making this kind of decision.

Please consider cross-posting this in the midwives and doulas forum -- those ladies are so experienced and very wise, in my opinion.

I wish had more information and help for you. You must feel so scared. I am sending good thoughts and big HUGS to you.

Hi Amber-
what a cascade or events from 1 U/S appt!

1st of all, I don't know how high your BP is & I wouldn't dream of telling you whether or not an induction is the right thing for you. However, I completely support you in doing what you decide is right for you & your baby, even if it is NOT what your Dr says you should do!

It sounds like you have educated yourself & have a good idea of what kind of things happen after an intervention like an induction, and now you are facing the hard part: how to avoid an induction if you think it is unneccessary! It is so difficult to avocate for yourself & your baby in the face of "Obstetrical authority" but that is what you must do now.

Think of your current Dr and your 2nd opinion Dr as resources; specialized consultants that you are paying to provide you with their expert *opinions*- they are not the decision makers here, *you are*!! Seek out a variety of expert opinions (2 OBs will likely think the same thing, a lay midwife or CNM might see things differently) talk to your doula, info from books, etc. It sounds like you have been cking into the link between BP, PIH, & pre-eclampsia. Get all your info together & make sure your Drs know that you know what you are talking about.

2nd) Find out what you can do to bring your BP down- are you staying wound up about this, nervous, & anxious? Are you doing any relaxation exercises? How about some quiet music & some gentle affirmations & visualizations? Breathe alot. Maybe you are already doing these things, but I wanted to mention them. No matter what is happening around you, you have the strength to protect your baby & yourself. You are right that people should not mess with pregnant ladies! They know not what they do!

I am wishing you strength & power to birth your child in safety & health. Keep us updated!
blessings, Maria
