cod liver oil and orange juice or tomato juice

I read that it helps for better absorption of vitamins to take the CLO with orange juice. I also read that Price recommended orange juice or tomato juice. Is that true? How does orange juice increase absorption? Any ideas?

My guess would be the vitamin C content of those juices.

I am making my own toothpowder now since I need something without glycerine to remineralize. I found it on the internet:

3 parts baking soda
1 part salt (I use ground Celtic sea salt)
a few drop of peppermint oil

I shook it all up in a small size mason jar with a lid. We will see how this goes! I really want to get the toothsoap but that will have to wait......

You might want to be careful using baking soda on your teeth every day - it is pretty harsh and can eat away at the enamel. Recommendations I have read say mayb use once a week if you're really wanting to whiten, but not daily. Just an FYI.

So is this co-op only for people in NY?
This time I'd like to stick to NY because shipping costs would definitely negate a good deal of savings.

Yeah I read about that too. Is there a toothsoap recipe like the one you can buy?

Honestly, I just asked one of the local soapmakers to take a basic recipe (she uses sap. coconut and natural products) and add a good deal of peppermint and clove essential oils. Dh (who hates all things natural) actually loved it and she has had so many requests that she is now making regular batches. So, just take a basic recipe and play with the amounts of peppermint and clove. I will say that with the second batch she was skimpy with the oils and it wasn't nearly as good and tasted more "soapy".

I have read Gerald Judd's book 'Good Teeth, Birth to Death'. To cleanse teeth, he recommends to just use bar soap, then to rinse 3 times. I have been using Ivory bar soap for the last few months, and after about the first 3-4 days, I didn't even notice the "soapy" taste in my mouth (although I'll admit, getting through those first few days were tough). I wash my tongue, roof of my mouth, everywhere, and it doesn't bother me. And my teeth feel squeeky clean - I really like it. The Ivory soap is cheap, and lasts for a LONG time.

Just a thought for you all.

nevermind, I found the answer

Children age 3 months to 12 years: A dose of cod liver oil that provides about 5000 IU vitamin A daily
Children over 12 years and adults: A maintenance dose of cod liver oil that provides about 10,000 IU vitamin A daily
Pregnant and nursing women: A dose of cod liver oil that provides about 20,000 IU vitamin A daily

Vitamin D

The recommended dosages for cod liver oil provide about 500 IU vitamin D for children, 1000 IU vitamin D for adults, 2000 IU vitamin D for pregnant and nursing women and up to 9000 IU for those taking large amounts of cod liver oil to deal with stress and disease.

In 1997, the Food and Nutrition Board of the US Institute of Medicine set the tolerable upper intake level (TUIL) for vitamin D at 2000 IU per day. However, the vitamin D content experts on the Upper Limits Panel objected to this limit, and several prominent vitamin D researchers have called for an upward revision of the limit. Experiments show that even during the winter with a low vitamin D intake, humans will exhaust stores of vitamin D at a rate of 3000-4000 IU per day, an amount that many people require to maintain optimal levels of the vitamin in the blood. Extensive exposure to summer sun at mid latitudes naturally produces levels of vitamin D in the blood equivalent to what is attained by supplementing with a continued daily dose of 10,000 IU, suggesting humans are designed to tolerate such large amounts of vitamin D.(4)

If you are a lifeguard or spend a lot of time in the sun, you do not need to take supplemental vitamin D; however you still need to consume adequate vitamin A. Animal studies show that even moderate amounts of vitamin D increase the body's need for vitamin A, whether the vitamin D is provided in the diet or by UV light (2,5). So, if you cut back or eliminate cod liver oil in the summer, be sure to consume plenty of oily fish, liver, butterfat and egg yolks from grass-fed hens to ensure adequate vitamin A.

So, I'm nursing a 2 year old, and trying to cure our cavities. I'm vegetarian but have decided too start taking CLO for A and D. Since I'm tring to heal my cavities shoul I take more than 1 tsp CLO and x factor daily?

Thanks!
Michelle

Hello, I have a couple questions for anyone who might know...

My 19mo old has 4 cavities in her front teeth. She nurses a lot ( probably about%50 of her calories from breast milk... give or take) .

We eat very healthily... lots of salmon and halibut, and fresh organic veggies and fruits.
I'm trying to stave these cavities off...

I take cod live oil.. Should she also?
Then should we both take factor x, and should it be mixed?( x+CLO?)

Also does anynone know about probiotics? I got some acidophilus for her but then later read on line that acidophilus in the mouth causes cavities...
does anyone know anything about these issues?

Thanks so much!!

hi, subbing, and trying to get through the thread.

shauna, i don't have studies to quote, or personal experience to relate, but i do recall learning that lactobaccilus reuteri can inhibit the growth of streptococcus mutans (the cavity causing baacteria) (?in the lab).

aha! found JaneS's post, with a link:

Reuteri also inhibits s. mutans the cavity bacteria.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...=pubmed_docsum

And it really kicks butt at stopping diarrhea.

I Reuteri can't you tell?
i think the abstract said that other lactobacillus did not inhibit bacterial growth.

"The effect of Lactobacillus reuteri against one of the major cariogenic organism, Streptococcus mutans, was studied. Yogurt products containing L.reuteri showed a significant growth inhibitory effect against S. mutans, whilst yoghurts with lactobaccilli other than L. reuteri did not show such inhibition. Further, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that consuming yogurt with L. reuteri significantly reduced the oral carriage of mutans streptococci, compared with the placebo yogurt."

(i guess i do have studies to quote!

Ooh I wouldn't recommend using a store-bought "soap" like Ivory for cleaning your teeth. They are usually not real soap. Soap is made from saponified oils like coconut oil, palm oil, etc. Detergent bars (aka "cleansing bars" etc.) are made from lots of synthetic ingredients and are way nasty. Instead of that, you could always get a plain, handmade soap from your local health food store (or online). One bar will last you pretty much forever!
