frugal birthday idea

Okay so dh's b-day is coming up and I've been struggling to figure out what to do...here's what I got so far:

Morning - breakfast - omelette, breakfast sausage (he loves breakfast sausage - major treat), coffee.

Then to church - after church give him a newspaper to read (he loves reading the newspaper and it's one of the things we cut out).

I want to give him a little cash to go to the comic book store in the afternoon.

Dinner - penne with garlic cream sauce (added shrimp)
After dinner - hot bubble bath, mulled wine, and read bought comic books while I put dd to bed.

After she's in bed full massage with oils I bought for Christmas for him, but have not been able to do until now b/c of cracked ribs (on my part).

What do you think? Does that sound nice or chintzy b/c there really isn't any "present," just consumables and pampering.

Speaking for myself, I would love it if my dh would plan a day like that for me, though with things I enjoy, that we have cut out, like a magazine or a book I wanted to read from Library, so I think it sounds great. I also think my dh would love it too, if I did it for him. It actually sounds similar to what I did for dh for Christmas, I bought him one comic book and a small gift certificate to rent a couple of dvds, plus I made him chocolate chip cookies ready in the freezer, for when he wants them, a couple of tickets for massages from me, and a get out of washing the dishes card, and he was happy. Good Luck!

You don't need stuff for a birthday, you want to feel appreciated. I think he'll feel appreciated with what you have outlined (and while comic books may seem to be consumables, they really aren't to someone who enjoys them!)

It's so funny what different guys want. My DH wouldn't be into a pampering day, but he did ask that we go to the philharmonic for his birthday at the new Disney Concert Hall. He said he would pay for the tickets; the gift would be for me to arrange for the grandparents to babysit and go with him.

I like classical music just fine and listen to it 90% of the time in the car, but hate sitting through a concert. I get fidgety and bored; I guess I just don't have the same ear he has. I am a visual person and he is an auditory person. But this is what he wants, so I will go.

What I want is to go to the Earth Fair in San Diego for my birthday. We could make it a day trip or camp and also use our Legoland passes. What DH wants to do for my birthday is go to Yosemite. I'll probably lose.

That sounds so nice! We don't really do much to celebrate, besides special homemade dinner and cake, so your day sounds so extravagant. I am going to make DH some flavored coffee this year with DS's help. He won't be expecting that.

I think it sounds like a great birthday! I would be so thrilled if that is what my husband did for me, I think he will love it! This is the sort of thing my husband and I do for one another since we have very little $$$$ to spend on gifts. Usually we will have a really nice meal, a small gift (maybe a sale DVD), and just some love for the birthday boy or girl. I think feeling appreciated is the biggest part.
