Alden Daniel's Birth Story

I decided I better write down a birth story for my boy before I start to forget things!

I had been scheduled for a pitocin induction on the 19th due to lack of progress and suspected low fetal weight. I had been having irregular contractions and bloody show for about 3 weeks before then. DH and my mom went with me that morning and my doula planned to meet us there. When they checked me at the hospital at 7:30 am, i was already 4 cm so we decided to just rupture the membranes and see what happened.

I was amazed at how much water there was! It was all over the place. The nurse seemed a little surprise that I wanted to stand up and keep moving, but they gave me a pad and allowed it. My contractions picked up immediately. They were four minutes apart and pretty intense. My doula arrived and really helped me find good positions with the exercise ball.

I started to be in real pain around 10:00 or 10:30. The baby's heartrate was having some decelerations so I lay on my left side on got some oxygen. The problem was some of my contractions were coming one right after another and we weren't getting a break. They were effective though, because I was at 7 cm. Groaning and screaming really helped me through transition. My labor support people also really helped me focus on taking big breaths in so the baby's heart stayed more stable.

At 11:30 I was 9 cm and they called the doctor. I started pushing around 11:50 and it was such a relief from transition. I felt so much better once I was able to push. The baby's heartrate was really decelerating, though, so we wanted to get him out of there fast. Happily, he was born very healthy at 12:04. Unfortunately, the quick pushing left me with some tears.

Holding Alden the first time was the best moment of my life. I'm really glad my doula thought to take some pictures of it. He pinked up right away and we were able to get him to latch on after about an hour. He was 6 lb. 2 oz. at birth so he really wasn't that unusually small.

Everything has been going well since we've been home. Some of my stitches are a little sore, but I'm still able to get around well. He's breastfeeding well, although he seems to really prefer Lefty to Righty for some reason. I'm having fun using his cloth diapers too! Overall we just couldn't be happier. I'll be sure to add some pictures to this once I get some posted!
