DVD review: ABC's Of Newborn Baby Care

Thread Starter
I was at a popular drugstore chain and went past the baby isle with various videos on baby care and parenting (on DVD). I picked up the copy of "ABC's Of Newborn Baby Care", recommended by The National Parenting Center ("seal of approval"). I look at the back of the packaging and reviewed the chapters. My eye zeroed in on chapter 11. "Circumcision Care"! Well, I paid 15-something for this JUST to see what would and wouldn't be said... hoping for the best.

Here now is a pretty full review:

Michelle Kemlar, LVN is the baby nurse and new mom Nicole and son Chase are the basic human guinea pigs in this video presentation.

Chapter 1. Introduction
- No mention of male circumcision.

Chapter 2. Choosing A Pediatrician
- No mention of male circumcision.

Chapter 3. Nursery Safety
- N/A ... but they DO list a bunch of websites including ConsumerReports.org (A website that DOES mention male circumcision as one of the most unnecessary surgeries preformed in the U.S.)

Chapter 4. The Basics
- Cradling position, swaddling position, sleeping positions, cleaning bottles & pacifiers clothing your baby (dressing him, the diaper being N/A).

Chapter 5. Breastfeeding
- Breast feeding tips, breast and nipple care. NO MENTION OF MALE CIRCUMCISION BEING A PROBLEM FOR SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING! (missed opportunity)

Chapter 6. Storing And Using Breast Milk
- N/A

Chapter 7. Formula
- N/A

Chapter 8. Burping
- N/A

Chapter 9. Bathing And Grooming
- Sponge bath (leaving the diaper on), mentions a sponge bath until the umbilical cord falls off and "if you have a boy and you chose to have him circumcised, you have to wait 'til that heals"! Now the diaper has come up for cleaning his lower half and poor Chase has been circumcised and you see his mutilated penis closeup! The nurse recommends getting his diaper on quickly (urination).
- Cutting the Nails info follows.
- Cradle Crap info follows.

Chapter 10. Cleaning The Umbilical Cord
- N/A

Chapter 11. Circumcision Care
(No visuals. Just a chyron on the screen w/ a voice-over of the nurse.)
====
Circumcision Care:
- People take care of circumcision differntly.
- Whoever preformed the circumcision, follow their after care directions.
- Baby's tip of penis may be red for a couple days, then thurn yellow.
-
Signs Of Infection:
- Swelling of penis.
- Restricted or decreased flow of urine.
- Persistent redness.
- Crusted sore that does not heal.
Call person who preformed circumcision of your baby's doctor immediately.
===

Chapter 12. Diaper Care
- Removing old diaper.
- Placing cloth over boy's genital region (urination)
- cream on his bottom
- Putting new diaper on.
- Diaper rash explanation.
NO MENTION OF HOW TO CARE FOR EITHER A CIRCUMCISED OR INTACT PENIS WHEN CHANGING DIAPERS.

Chapter 13. Bowel Movents
(No visuals. Just a chyron on the screen w/ a voice-over of the nurse. Explains the average amount of BMs with a breast fed baby and a bottle fed baby. Signs of constipation. Signs of dehydration.)

Chapter 14. When Your Baby Is Sick
- N/A

Chapter 15. Understanding Your Baby
- What crying means. NO MENTION OF MALE CIRCUMCISION.

Chapter 16. Car Seat Safey
- N/A (Does offer some websites on car seat safety.)

Chapter 17. Closing
- NO MENTION OF MALE CIRCUMCISION.

Chapter 18. Bonus Essential List
- Baby gear... but, mentions petrolium jelly to help healing with circumcision! :

This video isn't worth anything and I wouldn't dare give it to parents-to-be or current parents since it doesn't mention ANYTHING about:

a.) The care for intact genitals.
b.) The negative results of male circumcision.
b.) The human rights violation of MGM (Of course to some, that's a lot to ask for!) :

In closing, it seems to gloss over circumcision as "just a given" WHICH IT'S NOT!!! For this reason, I give this video a grade of: F

Gee whiz. No wonder so many people are so freakin' ignorant. I wonder if there are any mainstream parenting books, magazines, or DVDs that even hit upon the very basics of circumcision information?

Mayhaps we should have a letter writing campaign to the producers of the video?
