The title of a chapter in one of Dr. Robert Mendelsohn's books says it all: "If This Is Preventive Medicine, I'll Take My Chances with Disease."

Mendelsohn exactly expresses my sentiments about circumcision as a prophyalaxis. That's all I know about the guy and I think I like him already!

Maybe, maybe not. A proctologist does very invasive examinations to find abnormal conditions or disease. The same is true of cardiologists and other specialties. It seems that in some cases, some levels of invasive procedures are necessary or more accurate.

But does a so-called 'invasive' exam harm the body? I wouldn't call getting a Pap smear invasive. And in the case of cardiology and other specialties, aren't tests only run when there is already a problem? In that case, the benefits of the test clearly outweigh the risks of the tests and the risks of not doing anything.
