Pro. Intact Book for Library

Hi, everyone! I just realized that our public library only has one book on male circumcision--Dr. Weiss's Circumcision: Frankly Speaking. It is downright horrible. I felt shocked and almost like the sanctity of my library had been violated! (I love the library and it's one of my family's favorite places.)

I considered hiding it or checking it out and endlessly renewing it so that no one could read it. But that would be censorship, I guess.

I want to write a letter to the library and strongly suggest that they purchase an up-to-date, pro-intact book. What book would be good? They do have Gentle Birth Choices, which is very pro-intact, but shouldn't they have a book about this topic alone? That way there is something else when you look up "circumcision" in the catalog.

I don't have any book suggestions -- sorry -- but wanted to suggest that, if you find one, you consider purchasing it and donating it to the library if you can afford to do so. That might be more effective in getting it into the library than just asking them to buy it.

You may want to consider buying a book and donating it to the library. That way, you don't have to depend on them doing anything and no decision has to be made.

In deciding on a book, I would think what title would make people pick it off the shelf. The one that immediately comes to mind for young adults would be Kristen O'Hara's "Sex as Nature Intended It." What title would scream "pick me up!" louder?

There are several good books available. I can't put titles with authors names but Edward Wallerstein and Ron Goldman are a couple of authors. Gollaher wrote a book (I think was) "Circumcision, A History of the World's Oldest Surgery."

I Hate it that Gerald Weiss took my screen name as the title of his book. I once thought that maybe if someone typed it into a search engine, they might find some of my postings but a search will reveal hundreds of returns for Frankly Speaking. I thought it was clever and apparently a lot of other people are clever too! :

Weiss is the darling of the circumcision fetish groups because of his lies and misinformation. His inclusion on the AAP's Taskforce on circumcision along with other rabid pro-circumcision advocates like George Kaplan, Edgar Schoen and Tom Wiswell show that the Taskforce never had any intent other than the continuation of circumcision well into the 21st century. That's abhorent and disgusting and the AAP should be ashamed of letting this conflict of interest continue for almost 35 years.

Thanks, everyone! Buying a book is a great idea--why didn't I think of that? I think I'll donate a couple books!

Frank--your screen name is the only good thing about that book. I can not believe that Weiss would be included on an AAP taskforce.

Just make sure when you donate a book that you tell them you want it on the shelves. Sometimes when people donate books or mags a library will just sell it at their book sales.

I'd also check to make sure that they are willing to put such a book on the shelves -- especially if you go with books with titles like "Sex as Nature intended it." I live in a rather conservative part of the country and our local library has removed all books from the shelves that are seen as sexually explicit . Sexually explicit seems to be a pretty broad definition since it seems to have included romance novels.

how to make certain a donated book goes on the shelf instead of to the booksale is to make it a donation honoring someone deceased, with a plate in the inside cover. (i'm sure you can think of some poor man who lived & died without ever knowing what it was like to be whole. )

you can also request books; most libraries have a form.

if you want to escape the small-town erotica ban, find your nearest big-city library; even in the bible-belt the big library systems don't censor (i am currently reading susie bright's 'best erotica of 2005' ; they have feral press books that shock even *me*.) it is worth driving a bit & paying my forty bucks a year to go over a county & have better selection.) btw, thanks for reminding me to make some requests instead of my usual lazy interlibrary loans. )
