My mother told me the other day that my 4 month old exclusively breastfed 17 lb son needs to start eating only every 4 hours because he is too big! LOL I told her I would march him RIGHT down to Jenny Craig!

As it is, he nurses whenever he wants, which is really only 2 and a half or so hours, although I offer all the time and he is a 5-10 min nurser.

Anyway, I thought that was funny and had to share it.

Hehe! 17# is hardly big for a four month old. I told someone the other day that weight watchers had a plan for nursers. They thought I meant the babies.

My dearest friend has a 12 week old baby who is 20 lbs! He's also exclusively BF. Fortunately she comes from a long line of BFing mamas, aunties, sisters etc so they all know it's just that he's a big boy (his father was a big baby too).

ok, now i'm going home and stuffing dd's face maybe I should get her some icecream cake??



she's 15 months and just a little over 20 pounds...

exclusively b-fed until 6.5 months, then little solids.. even now, i'd say b-milk is more than 50% of her daily consumption..

am i making skim milk or something?

LOL sure put that baby on a diet

Ds #3 was a FAT baby he was born at 7 lbs 8 oz and at his 2 month checkup he was 16 lbs 7 oz, 4 months something like 22 lbs. He only nursed every 3 hrs for 10 min at a time and slept at night. At a year he was 30 lbs and at 2 yrs he's 33 lbs.

Quite in contrast to ds #2 who was 19 lbs at 1 year ( he nursed constantly) and at 5 yrs weighs 43 lbs (he's bulked up quite a bit in the last year).

Both are perfectly healthy boys.

Just yesterday at the store the cashier said to me, "Boy, you have two pretty close in age, huh?"

My sons are 4 y 4 mo and 9 mo!

I explained that the 4 yo is small for his age, and the 9 mo is big. She thought I had a 3 yo and an 18 mo!

Gave me a chuckle.

At least it was jus tyour Mom telling you this. When my DD was 5months her Pediatrician told me she was OBESE (her exact words) and I needed to cut out feedings. Bya miracle I had just finished a BF-ing peer counselor class and was quite educated on these issues (prior I was clueless) and told the Doc her advice would lead to malnutrition or death anda less educated person (in regards to BF-ng) would've followed her advice with these resukllts! IDIOT! She stormed out, came back and I left. I lived in one of the poorest areas of the US and it was in a clinic. This Doc hada swoll head and a major issue with anyone questioning her-we soon switched. Soon after tha tcourse case came out where a Mom, in my county (Bronx) had starved her BF baby to death and said she had been seeinga PED, I always wonder who her Ped. was...

HerbalMama, I can't believe your mom said that! My 2.5 year old son weighed exactly the same that yours does when he was a breast-milk only 4 month old- 17 pounds. Now, at two and a half, he is tall (36") and weighs barely 30 pounds, and when he gets sick, he goes down to 28. I long for those chubby days when skipped meals (yeah, right) wouldn't have caused as much concern! I'm so sorry you had to hear that from your own mom. (But glad you've maintained a sense of humor about it.)

My little boy is 3 1/2 m.o. and 18lbs.
He is a perfect chunky little monkey, wrist rolls and everything. I always say it's insurance in case he gets sick.
Good for you, everyone, not to listen to others opinions.

My exclusively BF DS was 17lbs at 4 months too! No one suggested putting him on a diet, though, because he's always been tall for his weight so he doesn't look that heavy, just BIG.

He was (and still is) a 5-10 minute nurser about every 2.5 hours. I guess he's a snacky kind of guy. inky

Good for you for helping him grow so well!

A held steady at 28 lbs for half a year (2-2.5)! And this is a babe who was over 9 lbs at birth!!
