Am I insane???

Has anyone ever started a school before? Am I insane for even considering this?

here's the situation: Jade currently attends my ideal school. I love everything about this school. It is small, private-and sort of has an unschooling, child-centered philosophy. The kids are outside much of the day-they do organic gardening, they build things, they have animals, they cook, they learn about other cultures, go on amazing field trips, have really nurturing teachers, the parents are pretty radically progressive for the most part, as is the school-they dance, have tons of art and music lessons. My daughter comes home every day covered in dirt and paint, and she has learned so much. She became a reader this year! I mean, this school is just perfect.

and last week, we found out the director of the school is going to sell it, and from what i understand, the new owners will not be keeping the philosophy of the school the same, and most likely, the tuition will skyrocket.

So now we have alot of just completely heartbroken parents-i've literally seen many of them in tears. We all know there is nothing else like this school in Miami. the public schools here suck, and the private schools are really very traditional (uniforms, sitting at a desk all day memorizing rote facts, etc.) and incredibly expensive. Like try 10 grand and up for preschool!

so i've been talking with some other moms, and noone knows what they are going to do next year, everyone is really freaking. So I thought-why not start a parent collective school? We could try and hire some of the teachers from our current school-since they will not be kept on-find a site, and start a school with the same philosophy? something a little more formal than a homeschooling group. We could pay the same tuition that we currently pay, and probably pay the teachers more then they are making now.

Am I insane????? Has anyone done anything similar?

The Waldorf School my daughter attends was started just a few years ago by a core group of mothers. They rented space and go going.

Your scenario is quite a bit different since you are talking about buying an existing business to take over and run. Those same mothers who started my daughter's school found out that it is considerably more difficult to try and purchase a site to move the school into now that it had grown in size.

Brief aside: I started a nonprofit in 2003, and we just purchased a preschool in 2003 (http://www.womengrow.org/preschool). The difficult part is to develop a sound business plan that will document to the bank that you business can make it. We were fortunate in that we found a local banker who was willing to support us with the assistance of another nonprofit that specializes in making building loans to other nonprofits.

I also don't know if you are planning on running the school as a charter school or private school. In Illinois, running a private school is "easy", but expensive for parents since we do not have any form of school voucher system. Starting a charter school is better for the parents, but in Illinois virtually impossible to do, since the local school district approves (or denies) the charter. Chicago has done well approving charter schools, but in the suburbs it's practically unheard of.

At any rate, start by developing a business plan: is the idea even feasible, how much tuition needs to come in, how high can the purchase price of that school be? You may also need to consider forming a board of directors with those parents interested in joining you in this project, and starting a non-profit.

One "easy" solution could be to form a cohort of interested parents, and essentially home school a small group of children. You could rent a small space, or each family takes turns being school house one day a week. Pay the teacher to come to your house as a private tutor to a small number of children. Worry about buying an actual school and running a program later.

The idea is not crazy, but the scope of your undertaking is immense. You have to keep the faith that what you are doing is right. It will take time, effort, money and many hours of unpaid and unappreciated labor for you and a small number of volunteers. But if you truly believe that this is the best education for your child, pursue the idea with all you have.

I do not know the school system in Florida as well as I know the school system in Illinois, but if you have any questions at this point, I'd be glad to offer any assistance or advice that I can.

Good luck!
