Freaked out about flu situation in my state - Page 2

Just wanted to chime in about the clothes washing thing. A month ago at my DD's preschool, a little girl with the stomach flu threw up in the classroom about 5 minutes before pickup. I rushed DD home, threw off her clothes, washed her face and hands, and she was just fine. I forgot to change my own clothes, and came down with the stomach flu the next night. So did about 50% of the other people at school with little Typhoid Mary that day. So I really felt that changing my DD's clothes (along with her 3 1/2 years of breastmilk immunity) helped keep DD from catching the stomach flu.

Two years ago, DD and I both got the flu shot. That year, we both got the flu twice (both stomach and respiratory.) We haven't taken the flu shot since. Unfortunately, we both got the respiratory flu the past couple of weeks, and it's been hellish. I did take Tamiflu within 48 hours, and really feel like it helped me. And as miserable as we've been, I don't regret our decision to not get the flu shot.

Good luck dodging the flu germs!

AuntiNi, try making your own elderberry extract and using that. It's more effective than tamiflu, and doesn't carry the same potential side effects.

If you want recipes I can give you two. One from dried and the other from fresh..

And its never likely to become virus resistant either.

I have dried elderberries that I picked and dried this past fall.

I made a tea for myself out of them a couple of months ago when I wasnt feeling so hot.

Thinking of soaking some in vodka and trying that. Dh found some recipe for it.

The price for a small bottle of elderberry stuff in a healthfood store is about $12. I figured it was cheaper for my to make my own

Easier too... You can also use blackberry brandy, which some people find more palatable than vodka.

Honestly, we want to never get sick, we're all germ-aphobic, they have wipes in the stores now for your shopping cart (ok, sure when my DD was a newborn I kept her away from sick people and in a sling), we have all these antibacterial soaps and gels, etc.

What many people don't want to take the time to do (not talking about anyone on MDC) is prevention--like eating good wholesome food, caring for their body, etc. No, they want to treat their body like garbage and then pop a pill or quick-fix as a remedy. (ugh--sorry for the rant)

How did we ever surivive as a species before all these modern potions came into our life?

A healthy, well-nourished person who gets the flu is much more likely to fair better and recover without complications than someone who is not getting good nutrition, sleep, who lives in a home of smokers, etc.

Just my 2 cents.

I recall that my dad gave me a shot of Drambuie when I was sick as a child.
