I had the same problem. I don't like Waldorf schools (I've got a few friends whose kids go there, and I've got two friends who attended them as kids and it's not what I want for my children), and it's the same with homeschooling. We didn't have the $500 a week for private schooling (plus I don't like the superiority or bullying issues which are prevalent). We're extremely lucky that the public schools here are awesome, so that's what we chose. I couldn't be happier. My kids are like little pigs in mud - they love it. Our particular school has a 'learn through play' policy, so for the first 3 years they basically learn through games and concrete activities (lots and lots of hands on stuff). My suggestion is to go to each public school and do a tour.
Having said that, if I lived in the US I'd be reluctant to put my kids in public schools too. From what I've seen and heard they're scary places. But there's always the chance you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm a big supporter of public schools now (I never used to be) and I'm doing all I can to support them and make them even better.
