Help! I don't know where to send him.

Ds is going to be old enough for Kindergarten this year and I don't know where to send him. I was Waldorf bound until I read some threads on the possibility of a religious conflict. Public school is out of the question. I'd prefer not to home school. Our area is full of religious schools adn that's out of the question as well. Help!

What other schools are in your area? Have you visited the Waldorf school and asked them about religion? There are some great books on Waldorf schools that will explain the Anthroposophy connection.

What about Montessori?

We just got the app for Waldorf and are scheduling a meeting w/them for a tour and all. I will definately talk to them about the religious aspect. There is only a charter HS in our area, everything else is public. Waldorf is 25+ min away. But I'll do it if it's the right fit

I'd visit everything that you have as an option and see what feels right to you. Sometimes we can make assumptions and draw conclusions based on our prior perceptions....then can be pleasantly surprised, or surprisingly horrified when we actually go visit!!

Enjoy your tour of schools!

Lauren, exactly . That's why I was wondering if anyone knew of more schooling options that maybe I overlooked. But after another tour thru our town, my choices are pretty limited, but we'll figure it out. I'm still reeling in the fact that my baby is almost school age

I had the same problem. I don't like Waldorf schools (I've got a few friends whose kids go there, and I've got two friends who attended them as kids and it's not what I want for my children), and it's the same with homeschooling. We didn't have the $500 a week for private schooling (plus I don't like the superiority or bullying issues which are prevalent). We're extremely lucky that the public schools here are awesome, so that's what we chose. I couldn't be happier. My kids are like little pigs in mud - they love it. Our particular school has a 'learn through play' policy, so for the first 3 years they basically learn through games and concrete activities (lots and lots of hands on stuff). My suggestion is to go to each public school and do a tour.

Having said that, if I lived in the US I'd be reluctant to put my kids in public schools too. From what I've seen and heard they're scary places. But there's always the chance you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm a big supporter of public schools now (I never used to be) and I'm doing all I can to support them and make them even better.
