NT February Thread - Page 3

Hello

I hope you guys don't mind if I jump in here and introduce myself. I was on an NT thread here a while ago but there were different people posting back then. I have been doing an NT type diet for a while now, about 3.5 years, and have had alot of health improvemnts. I have alot more energy now than I have ever had, and it probably also has to do with the fact that I am also gluten free and cow dairy free as well. We do have raw goat milk from our own goats that we raise and seem to be able to tolerate that fine. We eat alot of grass finished beef and some sheep and chevon that we raised ourselves. Also free range duck as well as duck eggs from the ducks that we raise.

The main parts of the NT diet that we incorporate are the raw dairy, bone broths, organic, free range meats, homemade ferments of various sorts and soaking grains. We also have gotten into making homemade ginger beer and root beer. My two dds really love that. When our goats are producing, we make raw goat milk yogurt and kefir and cheeses of various kinds. I am looking forward to kidding time, which will be any day now, so that I can start making all those things again. (doesn't this look like he is milking something? lol)

Nice to see you tweetybirds2.

so if you make a pot of oatmeal for the whole week, do you put it in the fridge until ready to cook, or leave it out?
Yep, just put it in the fridge and take out what you need each morning to heat up. So much easier than trying to remember to soak each night, eh?

Jane- liver! Keep at it girl, I'm starting to get the to the point that I am starting to maybe enjoy it. At least you're not pregnant! omgosh I tried it for the first time when I was pg and I just about puked it was horrid. But later after NT and all that I started to at least tolerate it, and am getting to the point that it is okay!

Very glad to have you join us!
Do you use sasparilla root for the root beer? Where do you get it?

does fish oil help with your immune system? My kids are all sick right now with asthma problems and need a boost. I have been thinking of starting fish oil with them and just need a kick to do it. Also where are some good places online to buy (at a good price)? Would you say nordic naturals are the best? I have read the most about them and their screenings for toxins. LMK what you think

OMG!! I just heard that a new raw dairy is going to be licensed in March in a town 15 minutes away from me!!!!!!

Gotta check re: pasture and stuff but I just heard from the head of the dairy co-op I belong to and grass fed is one of her requirements.

Yippeeeeeeeeee!!!

Yes re: immune system. But not fish oil, Cod liver oil with the vitamins A and D is the one you want.

Personally I think Blue Ice or Radiant Life is better b/c it has more of those vitamins. If we are using Nordic Naturals I still supplement with Carlson Vitamin A and D pills.

Probiotics are excellent for immune system too, do you make your own yogurt/kefir?
You may want to check out MSM a fabulous-totally natural-supplement that does wonders for asthma. www.vitacost.com has Calson's CLO at a very good price. We always do CLO in liquid form...you would have to take alot of pills to get the equivalent oils. Probiotics are also GREAT for the immune system, as is zinc.

Hello everyone,

cobluegirl: I am in the Tri-Cities area down in south eastern, WA.

JaneS: Yes, I use sarsparilla and I get it from www.herbalcom.com

About eating liver, we like to have it raw in smoothies. As long as it is fresh or was frozen fresh, it has a fruity taste when raw and mixed with berries and yogurt. I think it tastes like black cherry. If you buy it when it has been sitting refrigerated for a while, it will probably be nasty tasting. lol I don't like cooked liver at all really, as it really changes the texture, smell, taste, etc. Anyway, I hope I don't gross you all out too much with that bit of info. lol

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with Wilderness Family Naturals cod liver oil. Is it supposed to be better or equal to blue ice/radiant life? I just noticed that azure standard, a local coop, is carrying it and wondered how it compared.

so much good info on this thread! I haven't the energy right now to look through everything (it's pretty late here right now), but will get back to it tomorrow or the next day.

Tomorrow is day 28 for me! Yippee! I'm almost there, and I'm doing very well. I made and enjoyed some homemade vanilla pudding and hot chocolate with my girls this afternoon. My girls really love that, and it's quite a treat for them.

I was really impressed that my dd wanted salad for supper tonight, although I was too pooped from the day's activities to make it for her. She is learning to make such good choices wrt food. She'll tell me "mommy, I really like (name some sweet treat), but it doesn't make my body grow strong and healthy. It's better to have that only once in a while. Mostly, I need to eat lots of (name fruit or veggie). That makes me grow tall and strong." She's 4, btw.

I really want my dc to grow up with a healthy appreciation of good food, and not loaded up on junk.

NT food pyramid:

1. Lots of fresh, local, organic produce (greens, veggies, fruit, etc.)

2. Lots of fermented veggies

2. Moderate amounts of local, organic, grass-fed meats (beef, poultry, etc.)

3. Moderate amounts of local, organic, grass-fed, raw dairy (yogurt, kefir, cheeses, etc.)

4. Moderate amounts of raw, unheated oils (butter, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.)

5. Moderate to small amounts of soaked/sprouted grains and flours.

6. Small amounts of raw, unheated sweeteners (local honey, maple syrup, etc.)

7. If you must, very small amounts of "junk food".

Just a thought!

Just catching up with the new thread. So much great info.

Got this off the link Jane S posted for the WAP site:
Quote:
For those living in Canada or overseas, where our recommended brands are not available, be sure to contact the manufacturer and inquire whether the A and D in their cod liver oil is naturally occurring or synthetic.
So what are the other Canadians on this list using? (I swear I'm in an unending state of confusion over which brand of CLO to buy )

Rebekah, it is great to have you here! Your life sounds like the one that we are aspiring to! In the rural area that I live in there is so much illness and lifestyle disease. It's always nice to hear about people living on the land producing and eating their own healthy food.

Hey Rebekah, nice to see you again!

I am desperately trying to catch up with work...be back soon.

Glad to see a new thread started up.

JaneS thanks for posting the link to the WA milk article. It was very interesting. I hope the farm is able to stay afloat.

I just picked up Nutiva Coconut oil at the local HFS today (where they also have Kombucha tea in about 10 different flavors!). They had quart and gallon (!) size containers. It is so yummy. I made refried beans with it today and they were great. Has anyone else gotten this brand before or know anything about it?

I love the NT food Pyramid ideas. It really puts it into perpective for me. We need to eat way more veggies!!!

Are any of you involved with your local WAPF chapters? I have been tryng to contact our local leader with no luck. Am I missing out on much?

Off to put in a request for The Makers Diet with the local library.
