First appointment with OB Tueday and help....

I think she said she wants to do a Pap and I won't even be 6 weeks along... I am not comfortable with her doing one this early. It just seems like messing with my cervix so early would not be a good idea. Am I wrong in thinking that and freaking out over nothing? I will refuse if not 100 percent safe but if it's completely safe then I won't, since I need one anyway... WDYT?

I have never heard anything bad about having a pap early in pregnancy, but I have never looked for any information on it either. I did have one with all 3 of my previous pregnancies, and they turned out fine.

I am just a little bit ahead of you in my pregnancy. I went in on Tuesday, after just completing my 5th week, with some concerns about 1-sided pain. They did a pelvic to see if they could determine ectopic, and they did the pap while I was there. I was nervous about it, but not as nervous as I was about NOT having them do the pelvic and help quiet my mind.
I doubt that there is any reason to not wait to do the pap if that's what you'd like to do, though I'm not sure if you want to decide separately about the pelvic? Maybe tell your caregiver that you'd like to wait, unless she can give you compelling reason to do it this soon? It could be (sorry to just add more questions to the mix) that she wants to ensure that your uterus is enlarged, so they would want to do the pelvic anyway.

Sorry to pose more questions than answers - I had the same concerns as you, and I think ultimately there's never a 100% guarentee of anything, but waiting a little longer might make you feel more confident. And, as you can see, I was thinking of it as "If you do the pelvic, you might as well do the pap too", but obviously they are quite different in what it invades. Good luck mama.

Lurking from Sept...but I have similar concerns as you.

My first appt is Monday and I plan on refusing the Pap but doing the pelivic just to be sure that everything's growing like it should be and my uterus feels like an almost 8 week uterus should . My resons for refusing the pap are because I don't think that there's much they could do if they did find abnormal cells during pregnancy, besides watch it (and who wants to be worried about that when pg?) and because I don't want to bleed from it (silly, I know). Also my insurance only covers one pap per year and I'm not sure if they'd cover the 6week postpartum one if they did one now (yes, that excuse is pretty lame but the more ammo I have the better). I never had one until my 6 week pp checkup with DD#2...and I've never in my life(32) had an abnormal pap...

Yeah, I've never had an abnormal pap either. Perhaps I'll just wait until the PP one as well. I just really don't see any point in it if they can't even do anything if it did come out abnormal. I guess we'll see what she says. Thanks.

A pap is standard protocol for an OB. You can refuse it. I would if I have had one in the last year.

I'm having a lot of pain as well. Mostly just general cramping. I can't wait for that to go away. It started right around the time of expected implantation. I hate it!

No need for a pap if you've had one within the last year, although it is not unsafe to do one. The Pap is looking for cervical cancer (and changes that can turn into cervical cancer) If you've never had an abnormal pap and don't have multiple sex partners, then you only need one every 2-3 years anyway. I'd feel comfortable refusing it if I were you. If the OB has a problem with it I'd take that as a sign that s/he won't be flexible about other things! Good luck!

Personally, I wouldn't allow it to be done to me. I figure we're (baby and I) are better safe than sorry. I mean, if I'm going to lose the pregnancy I probably will anyway... but if I lost it after a pap it would make ME wonder. YKWIM? So, I'd just avoid it, myself. good luck making your own decision, though!

I had a pap last September. I have an appointment next week. (I am high risk otherwise I'd be with a mw and birthing at home.) Are they going to want to do one again? If so, I am not going to. I don't even want an internal. What's the point?
