Colic roll call

Alright, we've been denying it for a while, but our little guy has colic.
Don't they say that admitting you have a problem is the first step toward fixing it?

We've had about 3 nights a week of it, sometimes only 2. He'll go off for about 8-10 hours sometimes, and he can't even begin to sleep through it. He is so gassy it's not even funny. We've tried dairy elimination (no help), gripe water (a godsend!), bicycling his legs, massaging his belly, the colic hold, dancing (sometimes works for a while), wearing (somewhat helpful), walking, swinging, bouncing, block feeding (he has green poops every time he gets bad) and other things.

The weird thing about this little fellow is that he wants to nurse through the whole thing! He NEVER turns down the breast. But then he just gets more gassy. I got him to take a pacifier for just this reason, and he'll sometimes take it but often turns it down during a bad day.

How many of us here have it? I saw a post about a month ago--how is everybody doing? Has anyone found a miracle cure?

Well, I'm off to try to take a bath with him and calm him down. I've heard that this is a good trick, but our tub's been out of commission due to remodeling and this is the first time I can try it. Keeping my fingers crossed!

how long did you elim. dairy for? did you elim. all casein? have you considered the other common allergens? we've determined that reed reacts to dairy, wheat and soy. honestly after seeing the kind of pain he's in when i eat that stuff it makes it easy to eliminate it. he's not a fussy baby, so technically not colicky, but he's got so much gas it's sad.

ds#1 was definitely colicky and we didn't ever try elim. trigger foods. wish we had.

glad you find some relief with gripe water at least. you can find my homemade gripe water type infusion in my gassy baby thread a couple weeks back. it might save you $ in the long run.

oh and i hear you about the constantly nursing thing. reed eats all the time, which just makes him worse. i read that babies mistake gas for hunger.

anyhow, no sage advice here, but i wanted to say you are not alone. keep trying, mama!

hello, my name is michele and my little ava has colic. i have tried to deny it. i don't really know why...but dave has been saying it all along. i think i felt like saying it would mean i was saying something mean about her. how dumb! LOL

it's a mild case and once she does fall asleep she's out for hours (yay)...but to manage her really painful spots we got gripe water from colic calm and ordered pediacalm the other day (havent received it yet). she likes being bounced. HATES being swaddled or confined in any way. she like to be held upright (NOT cradled). i wish i had some better advice...we're in it together.

Our DS doesn't have colic but he does have bad gas, which often causes him quite a bit of discomfort. He is often really grunty and will sometimes screech and cry when passing gas.

We've been using homeopathic colic remedies that seem to relax him and ease his gas discomfort. The one that works best for him is called Cocyntal by a company called Boiron (it's also really easy to administer). We've also tried Hyland's colic remedy.

I guess if your DC's colic is due to gas, then these homeopathic remedies might be helpful. Fart aerobics are also great

I am soo glad to say that my lil one does not have colic.
My 2 yr old DS, Owen, had the WORST case of colic I've ever seen or heard of when he was a little babe. He would cry all day and half the night for at least the first 3 months, and then it progressively got better until about 6 months old. I tried everything - elimination, gripe water (which seemed to helped a little), bicycling the legs, bouncing, jiggling, the Happiest Baby on the Block method (which also helped a little), you name it, we tried it.

Owen also hated being swaddled, would not tolerate being worn for longer than 15 minutes at a time, and he wanted to nurse ALL the time.
I really think it was his nervous system. He came out of me screaming, screamed for an hour straight after he was born, and then had colic. I had colic as a baby too.
I told myself the whole time we were going through this to be patient, it wouldn't last forever. Now my boy is one of the happiest, calmest kids. People comment on how nice and mellow he is all the time.

Greyson, my newborn, is pretty darn easy-going. He still screams like a newborn, but he can usually be soothed. Speaking of which, my highness calls!

Add us to the list. She's fine for a few nights and then it's back. Guess that still counts as colic? I think milk sets her off; I'm still trying to figure it out. Coupled with little sleep, I'm going

according to the dr.sears definition, at least 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week. etc, Elliot's got it, too.
there is some sort of stigma, isn't there, like my baby has colic b/c i'm a bad parent...
elliot definitely wants to nurse the whole time through an episode, too, for HOURS!!! We've had some luck w/ hylands colic tabs. gripe water not so much... a bath will often work, so does jumping in the shower with him!
I keep trying to remind myself that he will outgrow this... someday he'll be walking and talking (and sleeping more???) and this will all be a memory... my nephew had colic (and so much more severely than E) for 9 months... so it could be worse!

UPDATE: Colic Roll Call

I've just got to take a moment here and declare that, as un-AP as it is, I LOVE MY SWING!!!

Stuart napped for 3 hours on Sat., 4 hours on Sun., and 3 hours today in the swing! He's never napped so well. We noticed on Thursday and Friday (very bad days for the colic) that he would awaken from a sleep in the mei tai if my DH stopped walking around the house. Then we noticed that when we bounced him in his bouncy seat during dinner, he also woke up when we forgot to keep bouncing. So the next time he fell asleep in the bouncer, we put him in the swing asleep (he doesn't like it much when he's put in there awake) and he slept forever. We've got it sitting by a fish tank and he'd wake up a bit grumpy, get distracted by the fish, and just nod right back off. I think I'll keep him to one nap in the swing and try to add another in his crib later in the day.

I'm so happy because I think his tiredness was really contributing to the colic. He startles awake very easily, and gets tired and cranky, which makes it harder for him to deal with gassiness.

I've also eliminated soy and am working harder with block feedings to try to stop the gas. I hope we get a handle on this soon!

Have any of you tried the *Miracle Blanket*. Everyone that I have talked to swears by them. We bought one and use it at night when ds cries. It helps him back to sleep. I think we paid about $30 for it. Before we bought it I thought it was expensive. I thought it was just a jazzed up receiving blanket. But it was worth it, he settles down after a few minutes of being swaddled in it. I would recommend at least giving it a chance. Good luck. innocent
