Favorite/Fun School Memories?

I was volunteering in my son's class this morning and it was too wet for the kids to go outside for recess so the teachers taught them how to play - Thumbs Up Seven Up (though now that class sizes are smaller they called it Thumbs Up Stand Up and did it with 5 kids instead of the 7 we used to play with but it was still the same game)

Anyway, we used to play that in 1rst grade and I LOVED IT. I had forgotten all about it until today. The kids were having a great time with it and ds was laughing the whole time. It got me thinking about my early school years and a bunch of fun stuff I hadn't thought of in awhile. My favorite was that our library had a yellow bathtub full of beanbags that you could read in - I used to love that thing - maybe I should get one!

Anybody else?

I used to love that game too. My favorite school memories are rainy day recesses and lunches when we stayed in the classroom and played, ate our lunches, etc. I also loved assemblies, band and when I was in sixth grade we put on a huge production of The Jungle Book with a chorus, sets, principal actors, songs, etc. It was great.

Thumbs up 7-up! Oh my gosh. What a great memory I have playing that. I can't remember exactly how we used to play it though. Something about our heads down and hands out with thumbs up and someone touches them and you have to guess who it was?????? I'm I right? I loved all the hopscotch games and the songs that went to them. Also the hand-slapping games.

I had a few teachers who were so bizarre, always doing fun-weird things like putting a black dot on the wall and everyday changing it till it got bigger and bigger and then one day it started shrinking. We all wondered, what is causing this dot to grow and shrink? It was him all along! We all thought he was kind of a geek back then but in hindsight, he was the best! I should try and contact him to let him know.

We would all circle a parachute and lift it and take turns running under it before it fell, or bounce a ball on it...fun fun fun
and in HS I loved anything to do with drama/theatre

Two of my fondest school memories are from the 8th grade.

1. In English we were reading The Diary of Anne Frank and one Friday when we finished the book we got to skip all our classes and hide from the Green Police (the rest of the school). If anyone found us, we had to go back to all our classes. It was a really neat project and helped us get a tiny taste of the stress of hiding and fear of being discovered that people went through during the Holocaust. I mean, the worst that could happen to us was having to go to class and we were so stressed every time we heard footsteps. It was really powerful for me.

2. In Math our class decided to figure out how many cars were speeding through the school zone in front of our school. We split up into groups and each group had to come up with a way to solve the problem. It was incredibly fun to stand out there with stopwatches and yardsticks and do the arm-drop-start-the-clock signal. Then when we got back in, we did the math & organized our data. I loved that we were given basically no direction. We had a problem and had to work together to find a solution. No worksheets or busy work...this was a real-world application of the stuff we had been learning.
