changing milk kefir grains to water grains?

Well....not real water grains, but for use in water/juice solutions. I got my batch from tofumama (thanks!) and want to use them for kefir sodas. I reviewed the Dom's site and it tells me there will be a lag time of a few days in a water/sugar solution. But do I need to rinse them? Throw out the first batch? Keep them in sugar water to store?

Any tips?
