Velour question

Bear with me, I'm still learning about fabrics. I bought some velour at JoAnns this last week, and could have sworn that the content said 100% cotton. Diapershop.com lists their velour as cotton as well. Today when I stopped by a different JoAnns to check out their colors of velour, I'm not sure I found it or not. The stuff I thought was velour said it was 100% polyester. It was so busy in the store that I didn't even bother asking someone. (At this particular JoAnns it seems that no one knows what they're talking about anyway) Is this right, or did I not find the right stuff? Is there polyester velour as well?

yes theres several different velours.. theres 80%cotton-20% poly, theres 100% poly and then theres 100% cotton and different variations of those. Ive heard once in a blue moon JoAnns sells cotton velour but Ive never heard of 100%. try pouring water on it is it absorbing or rolling off? if its rolling off its poly

or do the burn test and see if you get ash or a glob of black plasticy goo that hardens. the goo means polyester, the ash means cotton. Cotton will smell like burning leaves (sorta) and polyester will smell horrible. Ash with black blobs in it is a blend. The bigger the blobs, the more the polyester.

I the burn test! (there's a really good link to a website that gives more burn test details that was up really recently... but I don't remember what post it was in. It's gotta be on the front page or 2 of the forum)

There was a thread just yesterday about how JoAnn's mislabels fabric content on another board. The best way to tell, IMO, is to do a burn test. Cotton will ash and smell like leaves. Polyester will melt, drip and leave a hard edge like melted plastic. Blends are somewhere in between. Velour blends usually have a cotton nap and a poly backing.

If you want to know before you buy, maybe you can ask for a snip and go outside in the parking lot with a lighter.<--This idea always makes me think I should wear a black leather jacket and hide behind the dumpsters like the smoking kids in high school. Better than making two trips, however shady it feels.

Don't forget though, JoAnn's will take returns of uncut yardage if you find you bought 100% polyester and don't want to keep it.

the back of polyester velour is usually pretty shiny and slick feeling as well. Our joanns usually has the 80/20 stuff and the 100% poly stuff.

I have never seen a 100% cotton velour and I don't belive that it is made. It always has some Polyester or Nylon (The real soft stuff is cotton and nylon in 70/30 blend) and it is usually around 15 to 30 percent synthetic. There is 100% cotton velveteen, but this is a woven fabric, not a knit.

I've found cotton velour at Joann's...I can't remember right now what the poly content was. Sometimes they'll only have one bolt of it mixed in with the rest of the knits, it's not something they keep a lot in stock.

JoAnn's does carry 100% cotton velour. They call is terry velour and it's normally $9.99/yd. It doesn't have any stretch to it, but it's very nice (soft and thick).

I've bought that before, it is really absorbant and super soft!

Try the burn test on it, and see. The face may be 100% but the back will always have some synthetic in a knit velour. Knit Terry is another story.

Don't know if this helps any, but when I compare the 80/20 velour at Hancocks with the 100% poly velour they have, the 80/20 is MUCH MUCH softer. They actually look different too. The poly is more shiney, I guess.

I hope this is true, and I can stand corrected on this. I would love to find some 100% cotton Velour. I have been looking and asking for it for YEARS! Does PRR sell yardage?

unfortunately not anymore They are closing their business... you could probably email them and find out if they will be liquidating any of it. Its very thick and plush, but white only ... lovely stuff

Laura Lee carries undyed, unprinted PRR yardage. If #99 is the velour you are thinking of, Tiffany, it is 85/15. OSDS carries 80/20. Does organic velour count? It is the only knit velour I know that is 100% cotton.

OSDS must have changed velour source. The lavender and chocolate are still listed as 100% cotton, but the others are now 80/20. They used to carry all 100% cotton though.

Many sources will call it 100% cotton; the face may be, but the back still contains a small amount of synthetic fiber. I have seen sources call a micro fiber terry towel 100% Terry! Now that doesn't tell you anything abut the content. The only sure way to tell is to Burn,Baby, Burn!
