I love "Making Pies" from Patty Griffin's 1,000 Kisses. It is so poignant and describes the kind of monotony I so feared when I was young. One stanza is so telling:
"Thursday nights I go and type,
down the church for Father Mike.
It gets me out, and he ain't hard to like, at all."
And MCC's Party Doll is one of my favorite albums. So many, many good songs. "I Take My Chances" makes me heart swell:
"I sat alone in the dark one night, tuning in by remote
I found a preacher who spoke of the light but there was brimstone in his throat
He’d show me the way according to him in return for my personal check
I flipped my channel back to cnn and I lit another cigarette"
Badu insists she's an "analog girl in a digital world."
Tell me those that stick with you, that pop into your mind at random times, that are your mantra.
