Made progress today...

I've now got a huge sewing projects list on my computer so I can keep up with what I need to do.

Tonight, I made a VB AIO in size medium-long for DS. I just have to put the laundry tabs on, and I'll be done. It's got navy PUL outer, navy velour inner, and 3 layers of sherpa for the sewn-in soaker (true AIO style). I didn't use a 2nd absorbent body layer, since I figure velour is thicker than birdseye, so I can get away with just one layer. Unfortunately, velour STRETCHES, so I had some wonkiness when I got to the end of the tabs, and my front ended up stretching out 1/2" past the PUL, which wouldn't have been a big deal except the soaker was there. I sewed the aplix loop onto the PUL first (with another piece of PUL for reinforcement), then moved the soaker up towards the front a bit. Having a boy, I prefer to have the soaker up there. But with the velour stretching, it moved up even farther! So it's ok now, but I had to do some interesting stitching to get it closed right. There are two lines of topstitching across the top because in one place, I didn't catch the PUL or the velour for like 2 inches!

The elastic all turned out ok, although the legs don't roll in as well as I'd like in some places. It's a case of I'll have to tuck those places in.

Oh, and the silly moment for the day... I'd traced the patterns last night and labeled them really well. On the absorbent layer pattern, I put "2 absorbent layers" like the pattern says. Then on the waterproof layer pattern, I accidentally put "1 absorbent layer". That should have said "waterproof"! Well, guess what happened? I picked up that pattern when I was getting ready to cut my PUL. I noticed that it said "absorbent", so I put that down and picked up the other one - NOT READING IT. Then I used the first one I'd picked up to cut the velour out. I got done and found that my PUL was smaller than my velour. Whoops! So I cut the velour down to the same size as the PUL, then cut a little more out of the velour. So my AIO is narrower in the crotch than the original pattern. Maybe next time I'll get it right! I've now corrected my pattern piece!

Other diaper sewing progress I made today... I cut out 2 flame print body pieces for training pants for my nephew. I really need to get to work on those, so maybe I can get them there by his birthday later this month. He'll be 7!

Pictures? I'd love to see them. When I used the VB AIO pattern, I cut down the crotch width anyway. How do you like it like that?

Wow, I think it looks great. Tell us if you notice a big difference in absorbency or leaking because of the narrower leg area. I like it like that. But I always think diapers are too wide in the crotch.

Maybe tomorrow we'll test absorbancy. Today, he wore the diaper for a couple hours, but didn't pee! He pooped in it, so off it came, and I tried to see if there was any wetness in there (touching where I didn't wipe poop off him with the front of the diaper ), and it was bone dry! So I'll try again after it gets washed tomorrow.

I think with the way the legs don't totally roll in in every spot, I'd not feel safe with this under clothes. But around the house, he usually goes pantsless. I don't think the narrow crotch will be an absorbancy issue. The soaker pad is the same size, and I'm pretty sure my own pattern is similar in crotch width to this. Although I haven't made an AIO with my pattern yet, so who knows? That's on my to-do list (which is WAY too long!).

I had a VB AIO that didn't roll in very well at the legs, and topstitching a casing on it totally solved that problem for me.

So Vera -
That has only one body layer? (The navy velour inner?) It must be super trim. Does a diaper like that fit really well under "regular" clothes? I only have pockets (with and without PUL) that I use most of the time. I think they are a bit bulky - at least when trying to fit him into some clothes designed to go over disposables. Also, how many times a day do you usually change him? And how long did it take to dry? Just wondering if I should try making a few of those...
